  • Like the title states, this is probably a stupid question, but I have searched for about a day
    and coudn't find the answer.

Is it somehow posible to make maps using a 3D program?
(I currendly have google sketchup 6 pro and 3Ds Max)
Like, making the map geometry in the 3d program, and placing stuff, like weapons and
    spawnpoints etc. using GtkRadiant.
I tried to make maps with GtkRadiant, but I just can't get any decent results.

I hope someone could help me with this. :D

  • if you can export as a .map in either of those, yes. you can also use blender. Once it's exported you can open it up in GTKRadiant and add in the weapon entities, jump pads, spawn points, etc.

  • There exist map exporters for 3DSMax, however I commend the usage of GTKRadiant; the map exporter converts each tris into a triangular brush, which will lead to a bloated map file size, longer compilation time or even inability to compile, and possibly poorer performance in-game & in-radiant.

A few may suggest the usage of a .ASE model instead of directly exporting a .map, regardless, it is still afflicted by the entirety of issues mentioned above, albeit some more severely.

  • Thanks a lot for the answers, I'll finish up the map (I was already making it in sketchup for parcitise purposes.) export it in somthing blender can read and go on from there.
I'll see how it works out eventually.

(And is this one of those forums where you are only allowed to have one question and have to post another topic for another question, or should I ask questions in this topic as problems arise.)

  • Doesn't matter, although if you make a new thread it's easier for others to find info about things.

I wouldn't suggest using sketchup personally- but you can quite easily model something in Blender or 3ds and export it to an .ase which Radiant can import.

  • First try, and it failed.

I guess I made it to small, considering the size of the sides. But I don't get how those triangles got dislocated.
(And I don't think there should be white lines all across the map, but I can be wrong on that.)
