Well, it really depends. The usefullness of a melee weapon is of course limited, but there are some situations where it is a good choice. Best example from Q3 .. you hold the rocketlaunche, took Quad and one enemy is next to you. Now its better to use the gauntlet instead blasting yourself. Same with strength in nexuiz.

In nexuiz you use the the shotgun or the MG

  • If the shotgun is a melee weapon, the primary fire sucks ass for this purpose...
Secondary fire maybe. Anyway it's no perfect solution. A melee weapon actually could add a tactical aspect to the game imho.

  • *bump?*

I thought it looked like a walnut. I never actually played UT99, so I don't know what the original I.H. looked like, and looking back at that model, it almost looks like the gauntlet...

But I know it's a bad model. I was trying to make a sub-500 poly model, seeing that the laser was around 800. Obviously, if brought up to the LOD of most weapons, it could look much less... walnutty.

I thought I'd put this up here too. I still have the original lathe template, so I could change the LOD from 4 steps around, to 32 steps around. It's a bit archaic for Nexuiz, but here's a render. (I need to add a leaf-sight)

BTW, the walnut had a texture, did it come in the package?

  • This model looks like a bazooka from BF1942 imho.
I still think that a little revamping of your original Impact Hammer should work.

  • The few glimpses of the UT99 one led me to believe it had a domed shape. Hmmm...
The RL is modeled after the Soldier's in TF2, which was modeled after the rpg-6/7, which has been used by infantries for a long time, so that explains that. Anyway:
I haven't gotten a chance to come back to working on game-models lately, I had to make an emo-robot still life (don't ask).
Maybe if I bring up the sides of the shell to more of a dual-cylinder shape, it would look more like the first Impact Hammer. But still, I am REALLY bad at texturing. I need to use some tuts. Any suggestions on texture tutorials for games?

I think we can all agree that the name "laser" makes no sense, and the primary use of the weapon is as a movement tool based on explosive force. I present to you (in under 300 polys, the Force Cannon:

apologies for huge, black images, texturing isn't going well with PS:E 2.0...

I think it's some kind of matter-focuser, the parabola reflects pure energy into the concentrator in the center of the cross-beams, and it projects a hyper-dense, speeding chunk of matter. That means the laser should shoot something more electric-looking, so I need to know where the texture for the laser-missile is. Anyone know?

Nevertheless your explanation makes more sense than a laser-thing, that makes you bounce around the map.
On the other hand... Does everything really has to make sense? :)

  • I just cant stand that it's called the "laser" it doesn't have to make sense per say, it should just have to have the possibility of suiting the purpose of the weapon. I say a "Force Cannon" fits better than a "laser" as the title of a pushing weapon, and a "Force Cannon" would probably look different than a "laser", even in the nonsensical Nexuizian universe.

  • Okay, I was confused too, when I first played the game. Indeed it's very weird. I used the laser as an alternative for the shotgun the very first matches. Took me a while to discover what's it really for. And the name wasn't helpful at all.
Maybe your projectile change idea would help in making people understand the purpose of the laser. A name change would do the rest. Something like "Thrust Cannon" or "Pulse" or "Impulsor" or something. (Pulse sounds kinda cool, but my english is not good enough to say, if it's making any sense) :P
But what the heck? I thought, this topic was about Melee Weapons anyway?

  • Hmm the SW vid reminded me of those explosive things you could attach to your enemies in Quake 3 Team Arena. I think it would be nice to have something like running towards an enemy, putting a little bomb in his face and laserjumping out of the explosion. The only bad thing is in Nexuiz I at least collide a lot with other players. In very chaotic matches this could only cause more chaos... I'm not sure everyone will love it. (okay, okay, chaos IS a great part in deathmatch fun but at a certain movement speed and a certain game pace I still think this can cause trouble)

I also think a melee attack for each weapon (the one you're holding) would also be interesting. I mean being hit in the head with the mortar wouldn't really end the fight, but getting an empty rocket launcher in your teeth... I'm not sure however if such a thing can be easily implemented. I mean this would cause almost all weapons to have a third attack :? .

  • well if there was going to be a melee weapon added
the 2 most plausible weapons to add them to ( due to the fact that no more weapons can be added)

would mean that if it was to be implemented right now
it would either be added to the laser or nex

although i like the lasers secondary fire... its the second most changeable
the MOST changeable however is the nex secondary, as it doesn't really have one....
the nex's secondary does the same as middle mouse button

it would be something if the zooms stacked tho.
    but heres an idea

the melee weapon (if added like this) could do 4 passive things, to (im my view) make it a viable weapon
    1. increase damage shift to armour(add say 25-35% armour shielding?)
    2. decrease time inbetween when the regen/rot takes place (30-60%)
    3. increase regen rate (+0.1-0.2 health +0.4-0.6 armor)
    4. jump height/maxspeed +20%
as for active its 2 fire modes could be:
    1. a stab motion (weapon moves forward) would need to deal dmg based on its range and your speed(longer = less faster=less)
    2. a wave attack. a small wave emits form the tip of the weapon(short range) dmg based on the turn speed(ie you have to swing it to deal dmg)

those 2 fire modes would do it well... and make it a weapon worth mastering... with something to master(using laser to raise speed and then lower it when ur close, distance judgement,laser-melee jumping?)

pick apart and improve now, at least there is sumthing to build on

Enough with the lightsabers! Why are there so many star wars fans who just have to have one no matter where they are or what for. There are games that already have the lightsaber *cough* the star wars games *cough*. Play them if you want a lightsaber.

  • on track of sugggesting where it goes... may i suggest laser secondary... mainly because nex secondary would make it far to strong

but wait a second, what about the grapple?
teh grapple coudl have sum sort of attack in it as well
like the beam it makes could deal some obscene amount of dmg, assuming when u grapple onto sum1 the beam doesnt make contact

    i can see it now

2 team members in a ctf map grapple each other and laser themselves into the enemy
    would rock...
would kinda make sense and rock

  • With the new player-grappling included in the SVN, a melee weapon would be even more useful.
You could drag the enemy towards you with the hook and give him a nice beating with your melee weapon 8)

This would lead to a completely new kind of spam, the counterpart of the "Electro-Bitch"... The so called "Hooker"... :P

  • actually i do think that Nexuiz should stay the way it is.

Why change a thing that runs this way for quite some time?

After all, a game has personality - so Nexuiz has its own advantages, disadvantages, lucky shots, faults and errors (to be continued).

    Deal with it!

Okay, the Laser is not really Laser-like - but hey! - it's a name. It doesn't have to connect with your personal understanding of what a LASER is, but it is the name of this particuar weapon - take it or drop dead..

and btw - laser jumps are fun.. and now, i don't mean LASER-jumping, but Laser-jumps.

Don't complain - get used to it!
It all has pros and negs.

The same goes for all that Crylink-whining.
There are maps where you can use its advantages and others that just dont take it.
Get used to it or just try (and die) learning.

    Sorry.

  • Melee weapon is a requirement. It does not mean that it should be useful. They weren't useful in any fps (except CS, of course, bleh). Melee weapon is required for mocking your opponent.
