  • I have planned to create an alternative menu skin for some time, and now that I do not have enough time to build my next map but still some spare time to spend, I finally did it. Because, let's face it, the skins provided with Nexuiz are... boring (to be polite).

    Mean Red
I created this skin with "The GIMP", using the "evil9" textures provided with Nexuiz (data20080511.pk3), the font "FreeMono Bold", and an in-game screenshot from the map "reslimed: Slimepit Revisited" by Paul Evers, Mattrew Rye, Garth Hendy and Maik Merten.

I release this skin under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation, either version 3 of the License, or any later version. (Obviously, because the the evil9 textures are GPL)

    How to
Put the pk3 pack into the "path to/nexuiz/data/" folder and...
...to test it: execute "menu_skin meanred" and "menu_restart" in the console.
...to use it: change the key "seta menu_skin" in the config.cfg file to "meanred".

  • Nice backround.

    Sev, You're a "multi-talent"

Question: Can I use a small Movie for the Backround too? Must it be .gif?

  • i believe it has to be either tga or jpeg

i doubt you can use shaders, but i have seen shaders in the UI for like urbanterror and stuff.

  • Good looks.

Nexuiz 1.0 used to have a video intro, it was a .dpv extension which I believe is Lord Havoc's creation. I don't know how to create them though.

  • Awesome. This looks much better than the default, in my opinion.

  • A background gameplay video would make it perfect.

  • I do not know for sure, but it is quite unlikely that you can use a video as background, at least not without changes to the code. (I tried an animated gif, but it does not work Fisume)

A very interesting alternative that I remember from the time when I was testing all different kinds of FPS games was where you start in a "menu-map" (Sauerbraten?). This could be a show-off, demonstrating what the game is capable of :). Pressing ESC opens the menu in front of you, and you aim and "shoot" the options available.

  • Really nice menu theme ;) .

I like the background as it is, but I think some demo playing there (with some image filters so it would look red and mean) would also do (it was the way they did it back in the Doom, Duke Nukem and Blood days, so...). The bad part is that it would take some time to load and also eat up resources, not sure everyone would like it.

  • That's why it has to be a video.

  • Nice skin. Would you be okay with including it in the next Nexuiz release (not sure if as default, but maybe)?
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

Of course you can include it in the next Nexuiz release, that would be great :D. And an honour if it would be default. And thanks for asking, because it is GPL and you obviously can include it if I would like it or not  .
