  • Nice idea! The current flagmodels are horrible.

  • I could imagine those models in the original post would be interesting looking once modeled and textured, but I agree with Fisume that a flag in CTF should have less bulk. It should be something like a cloth on a stick, something that could feasibly be picked up and carried with one hand while running around.

    Of the ones that ai posted, the closest one to this is depicted in the first two images.

  • Oh btw, I forgot to mention, only on concept 01 do you actually take the whole thing, but the other concepts you just take the flag, the stands are always in the same spot. To mark where the flag goes and whatnot. (tZork's idea).

    And the stands can be replaced, so you can for instance vote on a flag then vote for another stand (like on concept 03, that stand doesn't really fit the flag, but i just wanted to show modified version of the 02 concept stand with the new "Nexuiz" flag).

  • I would prefer something more futuristic, technological, like a semi-transparent screen or a hologram. This would fit better to Nexuiz, in my opinion.

  • hmm, that is a good point. Nexuiz does have that futuristic theme (for the most part). I still think the flag could be a cloth item, but make it futuristic looking.

    Or maybe some fusion of an older style and a futuristic style. I like this style...

    Perhaps a sashimono-inspired flag, though made futuristic looking, would really fit Nexuiz.

    Anyway, what about futuristic version of a sashimono? Instead of the frame of the flag forming an upside down L, you could have it curve like a blade or something. I guess I just like the idea of the flag being partially "framed". It looks a bit more rugged. I could imagine it would also simplify the animation of it since the flag would move flap around less (in theory) if it's framed.

  • This is my idea of a "traditional" flag.
    I'd like it to be huge, especially when being carried, so that the carrier is visible nearly as good as with the current ring... thing... Maybe the carrier could leave a colored trail or something.
    And there's actually gotta be some more of this technological detail stuff on the staff. But I'm too lazy atm. :P You could add some shiny LEDs here and there, so that it looks a little more like the Nexgun.

    I like sev's idea, for imo it's more original than the usual flag stuff. I'm gonna upload a Harry-version in a few minutes.
    I don't like Quake flags btw.

    I was thinking of that portal in Hellboy at the beginning of the first movie. That ceremony with Nazis and Rasputin and stuff. Dunno the name of this device though.
    I hope it's clear, that the two rings are spinning in every imaginable direction :P with a metallic reflective Nexuiz-Logo at the center of this construction, spinning only on X-Axis.
    It should also have sev's blue/red glow inside of the spinning rings, but I'm still too lazy to add it now. :D
    Again, the staff has some Nexgun-esque LEDs on it. It needs some tweaking though. A little more of those useless details.
    I didn't think about carrying this thing yet. Maybe these spinning rings would apply on the carrier like the current blue/red rings. This would make him veeery visible ;)

    I could draw a "clear" version and add some color to make details more visible. For example I had in mind, that while the upper part has to be tidy and shiny, the staff has to look dirty, used and rusty, because it's made of cheaper material or something...

    Anyway feedback first.

  • Keep in mind that you would probably want the flag below 1000 poly (or 1000 at most). Of course lots of detail come with texture, that's why I haven't put in lots of work in my models for that.
    But I think we still need a flag, hence the 'Capture the Flag'. How the flag looks like doesn't matter, but flag nonetheless. I do like stuff out of the ordinary (ordinary would be unreal, quake etc. don't copy their stuff, invent something new is my opinion, Harry and Sev already thinks like that)

    PS. I was also thinking of LEDs and stuff on the stands that I made, those were to be made of metal, buttons, LEDs, Chinese minks etc.

  • I really like [GF]HarryButt's flag. I agree with it being large and I would love to see a smoke trail from both first and third person perspective. Bonus, it will help new players know when they are holding the flag :)

  • i like our flags. they remind me of gears.

    other than that i would imagine something more futuristic and technical than a "cloth on a stick".

    I love this one! And the spinning rings applying to the carrier would make it perfect.

    Some technical stuff (including a button to turn this thing off, not really of course, but for the "logic"): great!
    But LED's in the staff? That reminds me of someone who thinks he is a case modder because he put a fan with LED's into his Computer. :lol:

    And yeah, the mode is called Capture the Flag, but imo pretty much every kind of flag was used in other games before. So if you want an original idea for Nexuiz, you might want to try out something out of the box.
    The game name should be left the same to not confuse the players. But what the "flag" looks like is not really important to have fun playing it, right?
    Leave the name and play the game. :P

    Another pic to demonstrate how these cogwheel-rings would apply on the flag carrier.
    To avoid clipping weirdness on the ground (bad), you could make them "holographic", as in sev's first idea, so that they have a little transparency or glowing and just don't look solid.
    I added a color trail, just to check how it would look like. Now the player is at maximum visibility ;)

    When picked up, this flag would be carried on-hand meaning you cant use *any* weapon while carying. it could act as a meeleweapon tho, perhaps evena a very powerfull one.

    wrt to poly count: I dont this this is very sensetive. there are at most two flags on screen at any time, so having them be equal or more to playermodels should be fine (~3000+)

    Would that mean, that there wouldn't be any high-speed laserjumping carriers anymore? :P I like that idea, for I actually could catch them now and then.

    I do like that idea more than a trail, Sure that the flag-carrier should be easy to spot, but not that easy that you can follow his trail. He would never be able to hide if he had followers, give him a chance now.

    I and some others too think that the flag-carrier shouldn't have any weapons (except for a melee weapon or laser). It's not fun to play a map where the FC can rocket himself over the entire map and cap in just a few secs. So giving a melee weapon for the FC or halv the lasers power or increase the laser damage or something.

    PS. I like this concept.

  • A "real" cloth flag will almost always look similar to a flag from another game.

    I think when developing a new flag, the goal should be that in the forum of another game they will say: We sould have the same absolutely great flag in our game like they have in Nexuiz! :D

    But in my opinion, the existing "flag" is not that bad, it just would need a fitting, a bit of logic, other than just being a "sprite" placed at the base.

  • I've taken tZork's concept and made it into a model rather quickly (didn't include the stand) just to see how it would look like. Now these are just something I slapped on in just a few minutes and it could have more detail and whatnot, you can easily see the polygons.

    PS. The stick is supposed to be wood (as far as I can tell from the concept tZork provided), but they could also be made hightech sticks with buttons, LEDs and all that crazy stuff you guys drool over.

    Is it correct that the new Blender version has these fancy cloth physics?
    Could be very useful for animating this stuff.

  • well, i did imagine the shaft as some non wood material, but the drawings are unclear on that point. i do think somekinda metal or other techish material with a glowy ting or two on would look more nexuizish then a wooden one.

  • I like [GF]HarryButt's shaft better because it's got attitude. tZork's is a little stiff, I think it needs more attitude. I agree that the flag should be bigger. I'm not too much a fan of the knife... unless we can use it.
