  • Well, Blender (http://www.blender3d.org) can export to md2 (bleh) and md3( :D ) The md3 export is through a script which I have sitting around here somewhere... Anyhow, if you can get your hands on 3dsmax or maya you might be able to get zym support going. You have to go through Half Life SMDs to get the zym format though.

The mdl and md2 formats are so old you shouldn't use them. MDL is integer based which makes it blocky and md2 smells bad

  • Blender is open source.

Plus it has a large community to help you out.

There is no 3D modeller that can import ZYM. You gotta search for a HalfLife SMD importer/exporter and compile the ZYM model using LordHavoc's zmodel compiler.

Unfortunately this seems to be the only working SMD exporter atm (at least i haven't found more than that whithin 5 minutes) and it's still in alpha stage and doesn't support animations.

  • Blender can get models into Nexuiz in md3 format, just not zym.

AFAIK ZYm cannot be exported or read directly by any 3D package

You can get it from darkplaces cvs repostiory:
    Code: Select all
    cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.icculus.org:/cvs/cvsroot/twilight login
    (enter anonymous as password)
    cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.icculus.org:/cvs/cvsroot/twilight checkout zmodel

    2. What made the SMDs? If it was that Blender script, where's the .BLENDs?

I don't think the models were made with Blender.

    1. Might wanna put that as a download on SF too.
    2. Was it 3d's Max? In that case, if 3DS's were provided, the models could be edited with free software.

  • Why do you need to edit the source models? Make your own.

Still can't do much with that if you can't export them into the proper format for Nex compatibility, which is what he's asking about.

  • Milkshape = Not free ;). Shareware, $25. It is a good lowpoly modeller and it can do animations/bones with export to pretty well EVERY format imaginable. It can do SMD/PSK/MD5 etc etc, I use it mainly as a endpoint in my workflow to get my finished models into quake games. It can fully export and import SMD. Afaik it can only import MD5, which is strange, but since it does everything else no troubles ^^; mainly it can do SMD.

*Edit*: Milkshape is actually ok up to date. Aside from weightpainting, it has it's job complete. It has a large community and has stood the test of time. I definitly reccomend it for anyone trying to get from blender -> Halflife 2 SMD since it's so darned cheap. See http://chumbalum.swissquake.ch/ms3d/index.html for the list of all 70 supported formats.

  • Sharp construct, well, The lead guy (Something Bishop) is responsible now for blenders sculpting system : P. If you get the blender cvs from Graphicall it has sculpting beyond sharp construct made by the same developer.
