  • Honestly, I'm not a fan of the green. If that were made a white light, it would be perfect imo.

  • I think you went a little heavy on the emboss for the strength symbol. Maybe just a harder edge.

I'll agree the green looks a little odd on the red. I think it looks nice on the blue though. Perhaps white or silver would look just as good on both?

    They look great otherwise.

  • The symbol cannot get crisper as the whole thing is very small inside the textures. We're talking pixels here. This is pretty much as good I can make it look without actually creating the emblem on the actual model or moving/adding/reshaping UV's. And it's too late for that now.

I went for green as this were pipes with green liquid inside them. I had in mind that this is an important part to make the portals work. I didn't want to go with white as that would only be lightbars or just regular light, which is boring. On both of the portals it would also lack variation in color as well. I wanted an extra color for something on the portals and this seemed the best way to do it. Not many colors also fit very well between blue and red which can give a firm picture that it's a separate object and not just a variation between red and blue.

  • At least try it with white/silver instead of green.

  • I like that green there really... think it looks very good the way it is. What I believe should be changed however is making the model less fat. Given the fact it sticks to walls, I think it would look a bit better if the model was a tiny bit more flat then it currently is. Might be wrong, just what I think :)

  • I actually tried flat portals, but I didn't go with that for several reasons, the two main was that I think it would be a bit easier to spot the portals if it weren't flat. IMO they should be easy to see, and the second reason was that I didn't want to go too far away from the previous model. That old model is even fatter than this one.
Well a third reason, is actually the most troublesome, was that if it is too flat and too close to the wall/floor/ceiling, you would see z-fighting abnormalities.
Z-fighting is when you can see for instance two objects inside each other, like two brushes you'll see this weird flickering. The portals had that problem as well but I fixed it by adjusting it a bit. The further away you were from the portals the more you could see this problem.

  • Yeah I didn't mean fully flat, just a bit smaller in that direction. Just had the impression that might be slightly better but yeah :)

That looks just awesome... the glow is certainly very nice.

I'm too curious to not ask though; Is there any chance you could add some strong gloss over the portal surface itself too? So that the portal surfaces will also look very reflective using the Deluxe Gloss which would look really nice :)

  • Wth? Left below blue portal pointing to the wrongly rendered shadow going down from your portal.

Btw, I do no longer accept any input for the portals. They are now completely done. I'm not going to make any more changes. You guys had your chance to come with them when I was creating these. Too late now :)

    Fine. Fu! :P :D

Is it in SVN? Else where can I find the latest pk3?

  • @Alien:
Yeah I saw that in the picture, I just have never been able to see anything wrong with the portals or any pointing devices in game. So I don't really know what you mean. That red line in the picture could have been anything from a rendering glitch to graphical bug.

    @Brutail:
Yeah, I believe it is in the SVN now. Morfar comitted the portals just don't know if he has comitted the updated texture with the logo on it. You'd have to ask him. :)

  • No, the red line should be an arrow to the WRONG SHADOW coming from your portal (I have no clue if is it related to your portal). I admit it can't be clearly seen in LCD screens so I might post better quality when I get home.

  • I'm not sure z-fighting can affect shadows, it's just the surface which gets 'scratchy' so to speak. But I'm no expert in this area, however, the model no longer has the z-fighting problem (it actually isn't z-fighting just something that resembles it). But someone with more experience and knowledge about this sort of thing would have to step up and give their input.

However, could you provide another picture of the problem that you had? I still don't really understand what the problem is, I see nothing wrong with the shadows in that picture.

  • In 3 hours time I'll probably be back at home and if I haven't deleted the tga I'll post it. Maybe it some sort of shadow bug cause i'm using r_shadow thing which div tried to fix (it worked correctly for me all the time and only your portals produced this thing).

  • After an svn update, I have no portal models at all. (only the dynamic lights and particles)

    No errors, weird.
