  • I have started to create some video tutorials on how to create models for Nexuiz. In this case I've started with the MG ammo model. I'm not much of a writer (though I believe I will finish the documented approach sometime) so I went ahead and started creating it this way.
    Now, I only have one video up so far, about 40~ min. This is just the first one of a series, and I'm including the modeling process. Once every video is done I might make an overview video explaining all the steps without having the modeling and alike processes included.

    I have uploaded this on Veoh but when I watched it the sound started to lag and the video was going faster than the sound. I have watched the raw footage and it doesn't happen there, so as far as I know it's Veoh's fault. It could also be the MPEG 3 layer that I'm using. It said that recording longer videos than 5 mins could result in this problem. But when it didn't happen when I watched it I thought it was alright so I uploaded it. I might switch audio compression later, anyone have any good suggestions for that?

    Now, you can download this video from Veoh but I think you need to download an application from Veoh first. The video is around 300~ MB. I will try to make a compressed version, i.e. re-encode it. But the quality will go down significantly.

    Please have in mind that Veoh isn't enabled in some countries like mine (Argentina). I think it wouldn't hurt if you upload it to many places, like youtube, mediafire, etc

    Maybe it could be uploaded to the media page in the Nexuiz homepage too.

  • Wha, why is Veoh blocked for certain countries? Damn politics!
    The thing is that my videos are longer than 10 min, and without a director account on Youtube (which I don't have) I won't be able to upload the videos there unless I split them in 10 min each, that's a hassle :/
    I could upload it to several other though, how about Google Video? I believe it allows for longer videos but does it work for everyone?

    This means I need to re-upload the level design videos as well.

    EDIT: Currently uploading on Google Video now.

  • Veoh is not enabled in countries where it does not have contracts with advertising companies or smth (this includes mine country too).

  • Currently uploading on TeacherTube. SchoolTube was weird, I think you actually have to be a student, teacher or a member in some educational organization in order to register, and it has to be in any of the countries it has displayed when you're registering otherwise you won't be able to register. At least, I couldn't.
    But I liked TeacherTube just from the name better than SchoolTube anyway so no loss, and I was able to register as well. So, gonna post when it's ready, hopefully TeacherTube won't do anything stupid like erase my account as I'm no official teacher or whatever.

    Thanks for those sites though, didn't know they existed. ^_^

  • Actually I knew one supposedly better (hq thing), but that had strange name so I of course forgot. Now tried to search for that site, but only found those two.

  • Teachertube seems to be out of reach, but also it seems to have the same quality as google video. I read that it converts its files to 320x240 (or something) to .mp4 or flv. Same quality as google have.
    The reason why I cannot upload is that I don't have too high upload bandwidth and the account times out before the whole thing is uploaded meaning I need to start over and over. I've tried it like 4-5 times now, no luck.

    Any other suggestions for streaming sites? Meh, that it should be this hard to find a good one. :/

    EDIT: Yeah, as I suspected, I had an old email there which I no longer use. Changed it so now I should be able to receive notifications again.

    EDIT 2: Ok, I'm currently uploading the rar:ed video on: ai.planetnexuiz.de/TrainingVideos/ModelsForNexuiz/
    It's 294 MB. I'm gonna try to find a streaming site as well. I did re-encode the whole thing but wee and behold it got a few megs bigger even though I took down the size from 1024x768 to 640x480 and a big quality drop. Damn those encoders! DivX Xvid sucks compared to h264 (h264 doesn't even wanna encode from the video editing apps).
    In an hour or so the upload is done, do not download now. Wait at least one hour from when this post was made.

  • There are only 2 very good video compression standards: h264 and vc-1.

    If you are on windows, I suggest to get megui from http://mewiki.project357.com/wiki/MeGUI frontend and use GPLed x264 encoder, which is way better than those commercial apps have.

  • I am now posting a model here for people to use in maps and such. Originally, I created this for Brutail but I might as well share it with everyone else. Screens available.
    The polycount for the model is 4570 tris. However, it doesn't use a texture more than 1x1 pixel color. If people want to create texture for it then go nuts, if so I can provide high def UV layout screens.

    For some reason the normals didn't get smoothed when converting to md3, dunno why, it would look a bit better but hey. There's a readme on where to place these models and the texture file within the rar.

    PS. If people want more poses I can provide them, I have rigged the skeleton up and skinned it so I can pose it in any position desired. Unfortunately, I do not know which format actually saves the rig and the weighted vertecies so I cannot provide the raw file. Only the smd version if people want.

  • Hi, again. This time I'm back with another model, MG ammo. I'm sorry but I didn't record any of it's progress. I actually can finish it sometime, meaning I have to start over from where I left off. The reason is that I found myself not working with this model when I also had to record it, cause some days I didn't feel like recording others I was too busy or stuff around me happened and I just couldn't record at that time. So it ended up in me postponing the creating of this model.

    If people want this model I can release it, but you would need to have the SVN version in order to change a file (t_items.qc on line 818) inside /data/qcsrc/server. What you need to change is the 'a_bullets.mdl' to 'a_bullets.md3'. Then compile it with fteqcc. The model should be placed inside '/data/models/items' and the texture inside '/data/textures'.

    PS. The model has 436 tris. I have no idea how much the current one has as I couldn't open the .mdl model anywhere, but ultimately I didn't even need to, checked out the other ammo models which were around 200-300.

  • Ok, so I've started with the rocket and mortar ammo. The rockets as you can see are the ones standing and laying down. I was thinking that the box could have mortars in it as they are usually smaller than rockets. It would have a label on the box stating that there are mortars inside.
    Because RL and Mortar uses the same ammo I had to come up with a good combination of it. Of course there's the Seeker and hagar as well, but I figured the Seeker could use the rockets while hagar uses mortars :)

    Current poly count: 862 tris.

    Any comments or suggestions?

  • Yeah, currently working on that. However, you won't be getting the Hagar projectile model there :P I cannot open the .mdl in any application, not Maya, Blender nor Milkshape, I hate .mdl's. I'll see if I cannot re-create it from images I took earlier but we'll see. It looked like it had a couple of poly's and if the current rockets and Seeker projectiles are a lot then I just might skip the Hagar, and have them 'share' the space in the box with the mortars.
    Yup, I won't create the mortars either, as the box 'contains' them.

    I'll see what I come up with.

  • Update:
    There now is a mortar projectile (left), a seeker (bottom) and two rockets. I didn't include the Hagar projectile as I already am up to 1360 tris. Let's just say that the box contains those projectiles, as the Hagar projectiles does indeed seem to have lots of polys. It's very easy to re-create them but I figured I better not.

    Any more comments or suggestions?

  • yeah the second set of mortar/rockets just look a bit meaner . they're fat giving the assuming feeling of "packed with gib explosiveness" . good job. the old ones rockets in the first pic seem like something Wiley E. Coyote would buy from anvil in another attempt at baggin the roadrunner .
