  • Finished the high poly version of this weapon model. Going to start soon with the low poly and all the tasks involving that.

    EDIT: I just noticed that the thing inside the scope is a bit higher than it should be. I fixed it and it looks a bit better. But I'm not going to re-post an image because of this :P

  • I'd recommend the removal of the second barrel, it doesn't line up with relativistic particle cannon concept, and two small muzzles are much less representative of the MinstaNex than a single larger one.

    apparently you missed the original mockup image.

    The muzzle separates when fired (and maybe when overheating?)



    EDIT: on second thought, I might have misunderstood what you were saying though I do recall the nex having 2 defined beams coming out of it at one point.

  • Yes. In 1.0 - 1.2.1 it was a single beam.
    In 1.5-2.4 it was two beams:

  • Spiral effect is probably because railgun uses projectile and projectile is spinning around because of force given by magnetic fields inside the gun. And nex is using what, light beams? Yet, spiral looks very good.

    I kinda like the 2 barreled concept, I also believe this concept wasn't made for just one barrel and would look odd. Also over the years you've almost always seen one barrel all the time, even when there was a two beam effect it still looked like the gun had only one barrel.

    The particle effect isn't a problem, two small muzzles isn't necessary. Because the barrels are so close together this effect would only fuel the muzzles and merge into one big bright light (like the shots above).

    @Brutail:
    Lool, looking at the old model now it is kinda disappointing. I thought it looked a bit different, at least in my head. :P This one looks like a toy for some reason.

  • Btw Quake2 had the corkscrew spiral originally. Quake3 had the simple beam for default, but there was a cvar:

    cg_oldRail

    which you could set to 0 (wtf?!), so you got a similar, but not so good looking spiral as Quake2's railgun.

    And I never liked thw two beams :P Imho this is the best now, the circle smoke puffs.

    @ai: To be honest, I feel the same :? But it could get "modernised", so it'd kick ass again!

  • Ok, I've finished the low poly version and got it unwrapped. Man, I had to re-create the low poly version as the first time I forgot to unwrap it, which made this process take longer than I had hoped.
    Anyway, from this moment on it's texturing that's the deal.

    PS. Once I've finished this Nex model I will continue with the player model. But once the player model is finished I think I'll take a break from Nexuiz stuff to work on my own personal things.

    rail guns ARE two barreled, or at least uses two separate lines internally. I like that it's double barreled.

  • Rail guns uses two coils. Those could be fit into one barrel probably too.

  • Ok, long time no update. So long that this thread was on the second page! Boo!
    Anyway, I did some texturing for the Nex weapon model, I'm sure you guys have some comments and critiques and I welcome all constructive stuff. I have run out of ideas and I actually just am doing random stuff till I like it.
    Of course, the texture is not done yet, the magazine has yet to be textured and even those two things (4 actually) that cover the barrels in the front. I'm just posting WIPs, and as I've said, I welcome any constructive suggestions.

  • Hmmm. The green rod in the middle of the scope seems a little out of place, and the green on the barrel doesn't seem to match perfectly, but overall, it looks good.

  • Yeah, the green rod isn't done, I kinda stopped right in the middle. It's actually in the wrong place as well. :p
    I was uncertain about the green barrel as well. I was going to try something but forgot while doing other stuff. Thanks for reminding me.

    PS. The red, blue, white and other colors will glow as well. I just didn't add them to the images. Would take too long for an effect that wouldn't be kept anyway as I would need to redo them anyway.

    No, but now that you mention in, I might.
    About the two barrels, just use your imagination :p They combine power into one big rail. :D
    However, once there was 2 rails (though looked like one) and some people want it back, like morfar, and maaaybe div0 (unsure of that).

  • Well let me explain how a railgun works.

    Basically you have the two parallel rails and normally a magnet/plasma/antimatter which carries a charge/magnetism as your projectile.

    The two rails have an electric charge from a capacitor fired along them which drags the projectile through the middle, causing it to accelerate. When it reaches the end of the rails it flies off and gibs your target :lol:

    I've tried to make a variation on this before called a Coil Gun where you have a coil instead of the rails. I shocked myself on a 300 volt capacitor. That was a fun day.
    Possibly not the worst mapper in the world.

  • The back handle is too 2d. Also, I think it needs a stock, it's hard to aim w/o a stock.

    What do you mean too 2D? You mean the blue or the yellow thing, or both?
    What's a stock? I think I know but I'm not sure, and if it is what I think it is, then no. It won't get anything like that. This is not my concept and I don't want to change it. The current Nex doesn't have one of those does it?
