  • Hello,

greetings from a conference in greece. I just got permission from Simon O'Callaghan to distribute the textures from http://www.simonoc.com/pages/materials/ ... /index.htm under the terms of the GPL with future versions of Nexuiz, provided classical attribution is given and that the game documentation includes a link to http://www.simonoc.com/pages/materials.htm so artists can find his stuff.

    Thanks alot Simon!

This is good news, as some Nexuiz community maps use these textures, albeit as of yet licensed under a GPL-incompatible Creative Commons license.

Does anybody feel like creating bumpmaps/normalmaps and glossmaps for that set of textures?

  • Awsome!
I have made shitty bumpmaps for bricks in the past. I can't do normals though. My version of bump mapping includes making a greyscale image, lightening it, then making the grooves in the brick parts black. ... That might not be how it's sposed to go (got a tutorial? and a pk3 with the textures packed up in the way they will be in nexuiz (I hope all of them will be included, then we can make a wide range of egypt levels)).

Maybe have a wiki or anon ftp where we all can see what bump etc maps are done and upload the ones we have done?

  • Great news! This is one of the best texture sets out there imo.

  • Yes, and you already made some of the missing bumpmaps, IIRC, and included them with FW.

Can you bumpmap the others the same way, so we can complete the pack?

    Thanks
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • I noticed these textures in the latest Nexuiz.

    Are these textures *REALLY* GPL?

This sounds like a sticky-fingers GPL where it is GPL for Nexuiz and not actually GPL. And I don't see a release by the author stating that they can be used under the GPL, just a "text file saying person X said person Y said they could be used under the GPL."

If these textures found their way in another GPL game, for instance, would the author be upset? If Nexuiz or some other GPL used the textures and some company commercially made money using the textures, would the author be upset?

I am pointing this out because the author clearly has a "no commercial" and "by attribution" Creative Commons license for the textures on his site and without something stating from the author that they are, in fact, available for license under the GPL -- which doesn't mean just Nexuiz -- one might assume that the author of the texture didn't fully understand the GPL.

And there is nothing directly from the author stating that he has made these available under the GPL.

Not trying to nitpick, just advocating clarity and "due diligence".

Sure, they are GPL then since the author can decide about licensing. Anyone is free to take the textures and use them in their projects as long as their project also is released under the GPL. So even if someone made money off them, someone else is allowed to take the textures (as well as derivative work of them) and distribute them for no charge.

Hmm... Maybe he didn't bother updating his site. :P

Where is the license from the author stating the textures are GPL with the accompanying GPL license.

    There isn't one.

There is a third party statement.

Again, I'm not trying to nitpick but looking at the texture author's site gives a very opposite impression of permissible use and the only thing included in Nexuiz is a "good news person X says author Y agreed to allow Nexuiz to use the textures under the GPL *if*"

This may be true or not true.

I am just saying that if this is, in fact, the case then a license from the author should be referenced.

Is there an official statement from the author?

I just think it would be weird for that texture set author to have effectively re-licensed his whole texture collection knowingly.

  • This is kind of a mess. Once you've released something under one license, it's just about impossible to re-release it under another.

There would be nothing stopping a person from using them out of Nexuiz, and defying the GPL and using the CC because you could never prove where and when that person obtained said textures. The same issue exists with the Evillair textures, which are listed as CC on his site, but are GPL in Nexuiz.

  • In both cases the author has given permission for their textures to be released under the terms of the GPL, and as such they are dual-licensed. Users can choose which license to use.

This isn't a person x told person y that they may have been released under GPL. It clearly states who gave the permission, and it is the author. How is this 'person x told person y'?

Fair enough, sir. Again, I wasn't looking to nitpick.

Based on the replies -- especially the Irritant one, this isn't a gray area and case closed.

When I was playing some of the new Nexuiz maps I thought the addition of Egyptian looking textures was great and then I recognized them and hadn't recalled them being GPL.

  • It's nice, as it opens up use in older maps that were designed with it. On the other hand, the Egypt textureset looks pretty dated at this point.
