  • This is the new shotgun model I'm working on. I already posted a screenshot in the "Screenshots of what you're doing" thread, but I figured it would be much better to have comment about this model concentrated in 1 thread. So here's the model:

    Image

This is a very early version of the high-poly model that will later be used for the normal map of the low-poly. My main focus so far has been to get the basic silhouette/shape/feel right. I will then proceed with defining the model and adding details. Interestingly, I spent a week trying to get the basic shape done and had rather limited success. Then I took a week off 3d and managed to put this together in half an hour yesterday evening. And to answer to some of the comments from the other thread:

One suggestion, Lamoot- the handle, or the grip, is a bit boring. Maybe you could make it more grip-like? Most guns have extra detailing there, and a rounder handle.

Yp, this is planned, once I get to that part that is :)

The shotgun model looks like it has a sideways-loading drum magazine as well as pump-action supply-tube loading?

I didn't pay much attention to function, more to the form. Not sure if i can come up with an explanation of the mechanism behind it, but it probably won't be a pump-action type. The handle is meant to be fixed and I'll work on it so it will also look it's fixed.

Very nice start Lamoot, I hope you will find time and motivation to complete your model

I plan to work on it, when I have the time (depends on college and other things in my life), but the progress might be slow, can't say for sure how long it'll take. I do plan to finish this model, but in the unlikely case I don't, I'll release my work to the community so others will be able to pick up where I left. But this is highly undesirable for me, since I'd also like to put this finished piece in my future portfolio :), thus motivation is strong.

MUST BE ADDED IN NEXUIZ 2.5!!

It will be added to Nexuiz once it's done :)

And for the rest of the positive comments (not that there were any negative), thank you :) Until next time.

I can't wait to see where you go with this, you are very talented.

  • Great stuff! I think that the drum looks like it could rotate in increments after the gun is fired as a reload animation?

  • Does Nexuiz support weapon model animation so that individual parts of the model can be animated?

Then there is the question whether animation is actually needed with this model and if it fits with the final design I might have in mind (a design where the round part is not radially symmetrical, if you know what I mean)

  • REALLY good work. :D

Good thing I didn't continue with my own planned shotgun model.

Asymmetry on the ammo cylinder can be done in texture imo. :)

Now how I understand everything is that darkplaces supports:

segmented md3 and it's own segmented format dpm
nonsegmented md3 and it's own nonsegmented format zym

You can probably create segmented md3 with milkshape, maybe some blender export script.

How to create dpm I don't know.

    Somebody might give better clarification.

  • Some progress. Still in the concept stage, that's why some parts of the model might look a bit messy (and this will of course be fixed ;) ) and some parts are still rather basic.

  • Yeah, handle reminds me that of ancient dueling pistol - one shot, you're dead, cause reloading takes too much time.

  • Oh, I'll also make the shotgun ammo pick-up once I'm done with the shotgun itself. And yes there is progress, just no renders

  • Ok, here's a render of the newest concept I have. I'm trying to find a cool shape and the design is constantly evolving as you can see. What I'm wondering is do you think this is a proper design to fit into Nexuiz? It's not exactly the standard space-grunt-marine-rough shotgun design, but more like an elegant and sophisticated BOOM in one's face :) But it's rather unique and that's also one of the things I'm aiming for.

I guess the whole front part could be a bit shorter. And don't mind the handle, that's some frankenstein test stuff made from some old shotgun handle ;)

  • Like it very much, except handle seems not very comfortable. :) Too much weight on one side so too much pressure on a hand to keep weapon steady (or maybe you need both hands to use it).

What I like most is one shot design.

  • It's very good. I only think you should return that top bar (the rectangular prism on the top of the gun) to the length it was before- right now it looks a bit awkward.

    You are very talented!

  • It's supposed to be held with both arms :) and I'll see what to do with the prism on the top.

    Also:
What texture size should I be aiming for? a month or two ago I asked around the IRC channel and was told to use a 512². I have no problem using this size, but I'm wondering if 1024² would make it more future proof? Computers are improving, darkplaces is more and more optimized and anyone with not so good machine can always display lower texture sizes. But then again, 512² means less work for the artist. Discussion is welcome.

  • 1024, in my opinion. 512 tends to look a bit shitty.

  • I'll go with 1024² then. As always the design is evolving. I felt that for a shotgun it needs to look a bit more tough. I hope I'll be happy with the design soon enough so that I can then clean up the model and proceed with the low-poly one.

  • Yea, the thing is gorgeous. You have some real talent.

When you finish with the high poly model, would you mind posting the project file? I think I could learn a thing or two from it :).

  • I'm now happy with the overall layout and design, but I'm getting stuck when I try to add meaningful details. I'll have to take a break from this and refresh my head, let's hope new year brings new ideas :)

Yeah sure, but it might take some more time, due to the above mentioned reason. And thank you all for your support, it's a nice morale booster when things get frustrating :)

  • This may be too late, but I think the handle looks a little stubby, something that might be shorter than my palm is wide.

It's not too late, in fact the handle is not yet finished, as I mentioned before, it's more of a frankenstein temporary thing to help me get an overall feel of the shotgun.

The pipes at front look too pale and boring

This is just one part of the model suffering from me not having any ideas how to add details. I'll consider your proposal once I get back to it :) thanks for the suggestion.

  • Looks somewhat like my cordless electric screwdriver
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.
