New shotgun model

  • Oh so cool. I actually think this is the most interesting weapon "concept" I've seen for nexuiz in while, it looks original and fits nexuiz perfectly. You definitely got the style right! Fantastic job.

    Also, I can't wait to see it textured. If you're as good in texturing as in modeling, this is going to kick a lot of ass.

  • Looks awesome, the shotgun model did need some serious rework :P This is getting into as high quality, as the design quality of the UT 3 weapons, and its good, especially because you see this model one of the most in Nexuiz ;) (spawnweapon) I hope it will get some further neat details, and the texturing will be just as cool too!

    Ahh a little idea: on the latest picture i see that the bottom part of the weapon got many many details, but the top not yet, and you know, players see the weapon from top almost always, so i hope it will get some nice details too :)

  • Once again, the design evolves and this time I'm finally happy with it and even the details are coming along nicely. Front part is mostly done, so now all there's to do is the handle and then the high poly model will be complete. Additional details will be added with the texture.

  • The model looks awesome but now it looks less like a shotgun. The earlier versions are slightly reminiscent of early rifles which fit stylistically. A lot of the barrel is now reminiscent of pipes so the gun looks more like a biosludge launcher or something like that (idea :idea:).

    I'd say it looks like a piece of steampunk field artillery - the shaped barrel looks like that of a large cannon with the round back-end looking like it's wheels.

  • I agree with Ihsan- I think the old version is better, simply because it looks more like a shotgun.

    The current version is great too, but it should (imo) be relegated to a different purpose, like a replacement Mortar model or something.

    Well, they are very awesome, but it looks nothing like a shotgun, more like a cannon. I would recommend less barrel bulge.

  • I agree with the earlier posts. Eventhough this newest model looks cool and detailed, i would rather imagine this as a new Hagar or a bio-rfile as already mentioned :)
    The shotgun model, that you posted last on the page one in this topic looks better for the role of shotgun, because it gives a "gonna pwn you epically with diz"-feeling, this new one is a little like "cartoonish", it has lost the strength and the high-tech feeling from its outlook, and thats because you curved everything. What i liked the most in the prevorious version the sorrounding armor-like stuff, now that it lost it, it doesnt appear to be a close-combat weapon.
    In my recommendation try to stick to the sharp edges as earlier, and dont curve them :)

    Well, make the electro balls green and stick to walls and there we are :D Such weapon wouldn't be too bad I think, would cause some freshness in the weapon arsenal.

  • Depleted uranium shotgun - shoots depleted uranium shrapnel. The functionality is the same, but the look gets explained. And it's Nuclear! got to have nuclear in Nexuiz, And you can design funky ammo pick-up this way.

    The problem with the previous design is a messy model and my lack on inspiration how to develop it further. It's why I'm much more fond of finishing the newest design. Having a cartoony feel is temporary, a proper texture will give it more future-tech, solid feel. Some details are simpler to make in 2d than to model them in 3d, thus a lack of detail on this high-poly version. In addition, Nexuiz weapons should vary in style - machingeun, nexgun and sniper rifle already have the similar human-tech, sharp-angles-design and it's nothing wrong if the shotgun is more towards the circular style (variety is the spice of life ;)) All in all I believe this design will represent the shotgun well, once finished.

    Alternatively, I can release the previous design for those interested in inspecting it/finishing it. Opinions?

    p.s.: who decides a model is good enough to be put into official nexuiz?

    Ultimately it's up to the devs, and the devs usually go with the opinion of the community but of course not in every case.
    However, I believe a shotgun model has already been made (which will be included in 2.5), but this model could very well be suited for another weapon type.

    Yup, it's pretty much confirmed. I've seen that model and also new shotgun ammo as well. It's been finished (I believe) for some time now (talking weeks), the thing is, I don't know why no one has said anything till now, so that's why I stepped in. Maybe he wanted to keep it a surprise, dunno really.

    And yeah, IRC is a good place to get some more inside feedback and previews of stuff that's being made.

  • First we'd need a proper weapon function, something that complements the current arsenal. After that, I can go wild with a back story about the weapon and use this model for it. So in the case the shotgun model is already done, I'll still continue with this model and put it in my portfolio. If Nexuiz finds some alternative use for it, I'll be willing to release this model under a proper licence.

    Someone (ai, torus?) wanted to check the actual model to see how I make stuff. If you're still interested, I'll give you one of the previous designs to play with.

  • Hey, lamoot, i understand that you are disappointed because you've designed an often asked shotgun model replacement and now it comes that morphed has done the same thing too. Yet, only one weapon can be a shotgun at the same time. Now, what I mean is that your weapon current design can represent not only a shotgun but some other weapon. Therefore, I propose you to devise a new weapon (how it should work) which would use your very high quality model (it would be very sad (for me) to have it go). As an original author you should really have that chance. Then we would need to code the workings of that weapon and nexuiz would have another weapon to play with. I doubt anyone disagrees with that. Such hard work shouldn't be left and forgotten.

  • Yes, it is a bit of a disappointment, but since I have other uses for the model (portfolio) it's not that bad. Still, thanks for the understanding :)
    Therefore, I propose you to devise a new weapon (how it should work)

    I can brainstorm on this one, but some help from other weapon designers is needed. Nexuiz already has a wide variety of weapons that fill many functionality roles. It's getting harder to come up with an unique weapon, while something that is only a different combination of current functionality imo just wouldn't do. Irc is theplace to discuss this stuff.

    Also, on irc, there was some interest in me finishing the model as a shotgun and offer it as a non-official replacement for those interested.

    It's all still open to discussion since I haven't yet decided how exactly to proceed with this.

  • some gun ideas:

    Shockwave - fire a wave that expands but looses power over distance. the wave pushes players and missiles (and maybe does some light damage)

    some form of sustained beam weapon, lightning gun / plasma lance ...

    cannonball - a slowish ball that arcs, does massive damage on direct hits and penetrate think to medium sized walls.

    Some kinda bio / goo / acid ball launcher

  • I would go with 4th and making blobs sticky & dripping from the ceiling into the puddles on the ground. Blob + flames = ignition and fire wall (another combo),

    Cannonball could be used the same way as in UT. Sec. RL fire when primary is not active.

  • I'm thinking of something akin to the biogun in Unreal

    Primary fire launches blobs that stick to walls and ceilings. Players who touch the blobs receive damage for a short period afterwards together with a sizzling noise. The blobs evaporate (with a gassing visual effect?) and eventually disappear. Primary fire can be held to charge larger blobs. Blobs above a certain size can explode when they receive damage. Secondary fire shoots a continuous jet of slime that evaporates immediately on impact.

    I like Alien's flammable blobs idea :D

  • To expand the idea of flammable blobs, something could be taken from 1st Postal: igniting others while still burning yourself. You shoot blob at the enemy group and hit John. Later if you hit the John with granade or any other explosion source, he ignites. If John is/comes too close to Ann, he could also ignite her, etc... So for a limited time you become a flame source unless you lose predefined amount of health, are fed with more blobs to keep you burning or die.
