Now to make a fool of myself in the name of being technically correct...
spawnflags 6 worked just fine since I first had the problem. I thought i had applied the flag to that mesh, but i must have only applied the flag to my test scene, not my main map.
So in conclusion, to make an imported ase mesh cull light effects and clip the player, be sure to set spawnflags 6 in the entities window or radiant before compiling the map.
