How much will it cost to make a bar game?

  • I showed nexuiz to a friend of mine who does a lot of marketing and his jaw basically fell off. He immediately began pestering me about making bar games for the local brewery to sponsor. Now I'm not really that interested in bar games but i'll ask the two questions anyway:

    1. How much will it cost, in U.S. dollars or Beer, to make bejeweled a.k.a. diamond mine (for example) on DarkPlaces?
    2. How long will it take?

    Of course bejeweled is just an example. Anything that will be fun, easy to pick up and covered in beer bottles will be fine.

  • I'm not sure how much it would cost, but making gfx only, for a game like bejeweled could take few days at max, not sure about the code, but many ppl says that making games in quakeC is very fast

    btw, if you are going to make cute little casual game, I would love to help :)

  • My problem is that I need realistic numbers for the proposal.
    I can't code QuakeC at all so I just don't know how much work this will be. Even though it will be GPL (I don't see Y not) i need to put a value on the time spent making the game and MUST pay for it.
    I think DP is a good engine and will make AMAZING looking mini-games quickly and cheaply. My only real hope is that this can pay for hardware (mo-cap suit? G5?) or something missing that will aid Nexuiz development. Hey, if it just puts some cash in some of your pockets (and myself also) it won't be a waste of time.

    He needs a (prettier) clone of something that is allready all over the internet for free.
    He can't use the internet ones because, while free to use on the net, they are not free to use commercially.
    A GPL version would be valuable to him since it doesn't restrict one from making profit with it, and he apparently would pay to have it made so that he could put these machines in areas where there is a captive audiance (bordellos/hookup-joints) and thusly profit.

    The economics works.
    The guy would be paying for labor to create the thing, rather than protection money to hedge against the police arresting him (which is what one does when one pays for a license). It's a legitimate transaction :D.

    Sure, sounds good. For talking about licensing/money you may need reach the author(s) of DP and/or Nexuiz. If you need help doing development estimates just ask here.

  • If you don't know any QC, ... then you won't beable to do this so tell him that.
    It's no fun doing something for money when you're in over your head.
