  • First, I guess I should ask if there is one established :p Though I've never seen anything related to a backstory, so I'll go ahead with my idea.

Okay, so the other big tournament-style FPSes have backstories, right? The ones in the games themselves may be pretty sparse, but they're still set in a universe with recognizable characters and places in which they're based upon. It may seem minor, but I think that maybe establishing a nice backstory for the Nex universe and characters would help make it feel more. . . well, established, instead of just kinda having everything there. The characters, in particular, seem to suffer from a lack of background; choosing them is more based on whether or not they look cool, so you end up with a lot of the robots being played :P

My idea is to do this in an 'open' style, using the Nex wiki. Penny-Arcade was able to fabricate an entire universe based around one silly concept when a wiki was set up (some of you may be familiar with this), so it may work here, too.

I have a lot of ideas regarding the story, such as why they are fighting, who is fighting, how they relate to each other (my idea has the characters being divided primarily into three factions, all competing for the same prize).

I may be thinking waaay too hard about this, but I like a good story in a game, and I totally want to jump on the opportunity to help develop one :)

  • every story makes the game cruel, gives it brutality; dont justify a massacre!

  • In fact there has been a background story.
But i can't find it anymore and it didn't really add to the game imo.

  • My idea is pretty cliched, but it works in context :)

Basically there's some planet that was discovered which had a huge amount of advanced technological resources from some ancient civilization that died out, yatta yatta. There's a big controversy as to who the technology belongs to, because it's all a lot of advanced weaponry stuff - the Nex gun would be something that came from the planet. So, in an attempt to decide who would get it fair and square, the people who want it decide to hold a competition.

There's three factions involved: The Government, the Corporation, and the Aliens. The government is just a galactic federation deal, and they want it to enforce the law. The Corporation is a huge megacorp that wants it to gain power. The Aliens are basically space pirates who live on a planet that acts as an outpost for ruffians; therefore there's no specific race which belongs to it, but they're all acting under the same motivation.

I figured those three factions would be good divisions to put the characters into. Like, the various military-looking people would be government, the robots would be corporations, and the aliens would be, obviously, aliens. Then the individual stories behind each of the characters could be fleshed out from there.

I also had a neat idea about how the Nex gun used in the tournaments was originally the one salvaged from the dig site, but it was deemed unstable so the corporation released a man-made one

  • Hmm, those definitely could use a bit more detail, as it's still pretty ambiguous as to why they're gathered to fight in the first place.

  • I think simple shooters like this should not need a background story.. Its just playing for fun. And hey the background stories in other games are very very intelligent.. Some games to entertain the masses (ut), funny terrorists trying to blow something up and counterterrorists that must buy their own equipment, some species that gather fighters for their entertainment (q3). Hmm i saw a variation of that as heaven tried to find the best fighters against an invasion from hell..
I mean do you really want to have something crappy like this for Nexuiz?

Painkiller involved a guy dying and going to limbo to fight against demons for heaven. Other than that there was a South Park episode where Kenny was a PSP master and was killed so he could help heaven fight against hell.

For people who don't like it, they don't have to read it, or take part in its development. I imagined it would get a lot more fleshed out beyond what I gave, which was really just an outline. I figured it was a good idea for people who can't code, map, or do modelling, but still want to feel like they're contributing to the project overall.
