  • my mapping knowledge is little to none, to say the least, but it wasn't hard to appreciate the game Prey and its multiplayer. The idea of being able to walk on floors that become walls and ceilings as you navigate through the map, having really no defenition of up or down as you shoot fellow players is a simply cool idea. Is this something do-able or see-able in nexuiz? I know nex uses radiant, and so does doom3, and prey runs off the doom3 engine. I dont know exactly what they do to pull off the effect but im sure it would be lovely to see the nexuiz spin on it.
Heres some vids of Prey if anyone hasn't seen it. http://media.pc.ign.com/media/008/008926/vids_1.html (bottom right gets to the point)

Try not to be put off by the first post, im an avid player and had a forum account several months and 2 deactivated emails down the road. :P

  • Its already possible to get differently strong gravitiy in different areas or better different enities (like players) can have different gravity applied to them. But that can be used to get different gravitiy in different areas :). The direction of the pull is simply 'down' right now. It should however be possible to change this..

  • Sounds cool to me, but i know next to nothing about how it could be done.

Random idea: If you jump and hit a surface, 90 degrees to that surface automatically becomes your "Down". Is that (or a simillar idea) what Prey does?

  • Prey has special areas that can be used to go up a wall. Sometimes portals are used. If you jump the ´normal´ gravitiy kicks in again. Same thing if you walk over the edge of a wall or ceiling.

  • To do that, you may need to check all the phisics on the engine and on the mod and replace all code that asume down is '0 0 -1' to whatever down can be. I guest nowdays down is hardcoded, but can be modified. And ...welll.. I dont know much about how the prediction on Nexuiz is coded, but you may need to inform the prediction about this change trough the netcode, changes on netcode are always ugly often break things.

Also the way the player send back movements may need changes, etc. Is a huge change, feasible but boring to do, something that needs lots of changes, testing, changes, testing, changes, testing, more changes, more testing, and more changes, and more debugging, and more changes, more debugging and finally lots of betatesting. And still will have bugs. But I think is feasible, only a really boring feature to code.

  • IIRC You'll run into bigger issues as DP has some issues with rolling the camera.

  • and it will totally break clientside movement prediction, so you would either need to disable clientside prediction or also adjust the engine physics.
