  • I am new to mapping in general, just thought i'd try my hand at it. I've messed around with the UT editor but haven't done much...Anyhow, i am going to try to make a map for Nexuiz. I installed 2.0, the proper gtkradient, and used that nifty lil program to get it configured for editing nexiuz maps. I started with one of the tutorials listed on the sticky post...Bubba's tutorial i think, one of the first few on the list and made my box and hollowed it and whatnot, and the next part of the tutorial said 'now go inside and take a look' & i used directional arrows/mouse to position the camera in the box but on my screen instead of looking like i was in a room i would see like...parts of the room i would see the colors i set for walls/floor/ceilings ect..kind of glithches in and out but it never looks like an actual room or like the camera isin the box i've made like the tutorial demonstrates. . Advice?
Also, is it a bad idea for me to try to break my mapping cherry on nexiuz or should i start with quake or something similiar or does it really make any difference at all?

And from those who know, what would be the best tutorials on/off of the list for learning to create nexiuz maps with gtkradient?

    Appreciate your time.

Its all a bit unclear, but from what i understand you did make it as far as holowing the box and moving the camera inside..? And now you wish to texture it in i uderstand it right. To texture something you will first need to load the textures you wish to use. this is done in the "textures" menu. select a textures subset and it will be displayed in the texturewindow (lower right corner by default). When you found a texture you like, select the wall, floor or celing(s) you wish to have this texture on and then click the texture in teh texture window.

Srating out with nexuiz insted of say quake3 or ET will not make mutch of a diffrance. there are difrances between al thise, but the basics are the same for all thise.

I would recomend you try and follow tutorials for quake3 for the basic stuff, most of this works just the same in nexuiz.

For the question of what tutorials.. bubbas stuff should work well for the basics. A big part of gettin into mapping is just trial and errror and many, many hrs of practice.

Good luck and Have fun =)

  • Thank you for your advice. I guess i wasn't too clear on explaining my problem because i wasn't too clear on what the problem was. I know how to apply a texture. let me try to explain again..heh..
I make the box for the room, hollow it, position camera. Only, i cant' exactly get the camera inside the box so it shows me the inside of the room properly. It's all fragmented and distorted. Could the maybe be a problem with my video card? It's just hard for me to go inside my room and edit it when I can't go in and see an actual room. Maybe this will help you understand what I was trying to say. The screenshots on the tutorial show him just positioning camera inside and being able to look around and see the pretty little box he's created, but for me it only shows fragments of the room, depending on how i position the camera. Just kind of annoying. If this still doesn't help anyone to understand what I'm trying to say then i'll try to take some screenshots and post them later. i think i did a better job of describing the problem this time, though, i was a tad intoxicated during my last post. *ahem*

  • Ah i see what you mean now, well it sounds a bit like you have the camera inside one of the walls.

Theres a few diffrent ways of moving the camera vew. Just using the arrow keys, hard to get any presition with this one, i presonaly never use it. Using the mouse + arrows, the way i usualy oriant myself in cam view; First rightclick in the 3d view to enter freefly mode then use the mouse to "look" and the arrow keys to move. to exit this more press rmb again. Anotehr way to move is holding down the ctl key and pressing the mousewheel / middle button in the 2d view. To change the camera ngle just press the middle button.

    Hope this solves yer probs.

  • Theres no law saying is should be done like this. Its just the way i usualy prefer to do it. it keeps the 2dview clean and helps with texture alignment on both sides on the wall. depending on the situation othe methods can be more sutable.

  • Now correct me if I'm wrong but by this reasoning a crate with the bottom texture caulked and resting on the ground creates a t junction also?

  • Crates and sutch are usualy, or at least should be, detail brushes. t-junctions only apply when both brushes are structural ones.

  • Thanx to everyone for links to tutorials, thankyou UT for putting edtor in game to start with, perhaps lee and the team might consider doing the same if allowed by law in next update of game it would be easier especially for those that have used unreal ed before and have an idea of shaders, textures, nodeing etc.
Good work, praise and thanks to all those working on making more good maps.

  • I would like to add my favourite for Quake 3, Jk2, Jk3, Half-Life, Crysis, UT, and all the other branches from those to the list.

    map-craft.com

This site has a very active forum for help, although they won't be able to help you out with any Nexuiz only mapping. They have a full range of 152 tutorials (currently) mostly on entities and scripting, but a large amount of shader tutorials, getting textures to work ingame, etc, and loads of mapping tutorials.

I would also like to add a Quake 3 site called

    simonoc.com

He is a Quake 3 mapper and texture maker with links to all the good sites for seeing others work etc. He has some very useful tutorials on manual rock walls, (joined up, may I add) and using alpha blending with DotProduct2 (if Nexuiz supports this... does it?)

Finally, once more up and coming site by the famous Astrocreep is here:

    levelmakers.com

There are individual sections for all the Quake games and Source games, but the Quake forums are probably what you want and are the most active.
