  • Hi!

I have new idea to get more cool Maps for less players and to include them in the next release of Nexuiz.

We can start a 1024³ (or maybe 2048³) Mapping-Contest! This means:
The map must be 1024 units height. 1024 units flat and 1024 units deep. Style is up yours!

We must have then a jury which testes the maps.

So we need two lists: Jury and participants

    Participiants:
    localhost

    Jury:

Hope some take part to this!
    It wasn't me!

  • a 1024 cube in nexuiz is *very* small for a map.
    HOF:

<Diablo> quake1 never had a weapon like that.
<Vordreller> there was no need for anything over 4GB untill Vista came along

My nexuiz maps are tiny compared to my other map works :D

Keep in mind that a nexuiz playermodel is arround 70 qu high and can jump arround 512 units up with a lserjump.

  • Not TOO big...like that reservoir map, or blueAmuse.

But also not Eggs and Bacon sized either.

  • Just for the record, divVerent calculated the maximum height of a perfect laserjump.. the result is a bit of an eyeopener..
[00:11] <div0> maximum item height a PERFECT laser jumper could reach would be 825qu...

This would be a totaly perfect laser jump tho, not really humanly possible. But it still gives you an idea of just mow mutch movement space you need. and teh laser is not the strongest pusing gun there is eigther.

Maps that size takes tons of time. I doubt to many ppl are willing to take on a challange that big.

  • Ok, so we're thinking more like 3v3 size, like for the ladder?

edit : I just realized that the map contest was for a DM map. oops.

Maybe the dimensions are too small but the IDEA is GREAT! Can you pack great gameplay into a 2048³ bounding box?
    I'll make 1 anyway.

  • I had a quicky look at the smallst official nexuiz map (i think), basement. a box surrounding this is 1744x1520y632z (hmm i knew it was smal, but that small..?) so a 2048 should be well enougth space for a small to medium map.

  • okay then 2048 units.
So post here if you want to take part.

Then we can set up a deadline when the maps must be finished.
And the maps should be dm. This is much easier for 2048 units...

Well, if the prize should be inclusion in the next release, all texures/models/etc. used & the final map would have to be GPLed (or compatible)...

  • Heh, never made a 1024-mapping contest for q3.

So making this 2048-contest is a great idea and won't take too much time (I worked on the runningman maps on and off for about 3 month (incl. pauses))

    So count me in :P

Btw.: I think the jury should judge two categories: gameplay and visuals. So there can be two winners or one with both titles. If you'd like me to be in the jury my map won't be judged of course ;)

  • sounds good. I could organize it, but we'd need a rating system. We could have judges or we could have a public voting system. I'll throw together a script when I find the time, but I'd need to know all the stuff I mentioned before.

  • well we make a 2048³ map where the map isn't over 2048 units and 2048 units must be used. The type is dm the map must be a pk3 archive with cuzstom content included and a cfg and txt. also there must be a readme that the map is under the gpl licence.

and the jury must get the .map-file to look at it to see how well it's mapped (hint brushes etc.)

THE MAP MUST BE UNDER GPL!!!

  • So what do we still need to get this contest going on ?

I'd suggest a jury of maybe 5-7 people. (sth. like 3 of the best players around (morfar; kojak ?) and 2 of the devs)
They should vote on Gameplay and Visuals seperately.
I suggest a voting system where 0 is the lowest and 10 is the highest, and you can choose any integer-value between (incl. 0 and 10;))

Additionally there could be a poll in the forums after the deadline, where everyone can pick his favourite map, and can read the results of the official jury.

The winning map and maybe the follow ups will be a part of the next release.

And i think we all agree on the 2048x2048x2048 rule like posted before, and the map must be GPL'd

    Questions that are still open:

How long should the contest last ? (Deadline ?)
    -I'm in at any time
    When does it start ?
    -The sooner the better
    Who's in the jury ? (suggestions ?)

and the jury must get the .map-file to look at it to see how well it's mapped (hint brushes etc.)

I don't think that judging the brushwork in-editor is necessary. If it's mapped poorly one will see that ingame and the performance will directly affect the voting on the gameplay-factor. Or we add a third category called "Technical" where fps-drops etc. are taken into account. Of course the *.map file has to come with the *.pk3 if the author wants the map to be included in an upcoming release due to the GPL.

  • Too bad it's dm... I have a new and fast ctf map in my mind... :(

I might hop in too, tho I first have to think about how the map will look like as a dm map first. I'll tell you how I decide then.

i'd stretch the deadline a bit. 3 weeks is too short imo as 2048³ is not that small. So i'd go for
July 22nd (6 weeks from now on) or for better recognition and less pressure July 31st.

I think there shouldn't be a restriction on the gamemode. One can make a minstagib-map or a ctf-map as well. Of course building a ctf-map in 2048³ is a bit difficult, but why not.
2048³ should be enough of a restriction.

  • I agree with strahlemann. Some extra CTF map's wouldnt be a bad idea. The only problem I could think of with that though, is judging. Its might be hard to compare the gameplay of a ctf map to a dm map.
