To heighten awareness of proper packaging and some other neat features that have been added to the game, such as divVerent's radar system, Nexuiz Ninjaz is hosting a Repackage, Remake, Reinspire Mapping Contest.

We're putting a big emphasis on the proper packaging of maps, including the new .mapinfo, map pictures, bot waypoints and radar pictures but we're always focusing on 5 other dimensions. Textures, Sounds, Music, Item Placement and Flow. This mapping contest is like none you've ever seen!

PRIZES will be awarded to the top 3 contestants.

Please read this thread in it's entirety for details.

  • Nice to see such efforts! I think that's what we need now what some of us has already mentioned: quality media for the quality code!

    As for myself, I won't take part... sorry. I'm a judge :P

  • Judges can still participate but they are ineligible for prizes. I have a few maps in mind I plan on updating / remixing :). Thanks for the kind words.

  • Hmm since its three months I may well enter. I have plenty of maps that need updating too!
Possibly not the worst mapper in the world.

  • Would be perfect if the content would be released under GPL so it could be included in official Nexuiz. :)

Sorry Mirio, the Five judges have already been picked. However, you can express your opinions in #nn.contest as the maps come out. We'll also have a "people's choice award" that I haven't mentioned in the post.

ai wrote:What type of mode is it, I couldn't find it (or missed it)? Or can you choose yourself? Also with 'flow' do you mean gameplay? Cause if so gameplay varies for instance from a DM to TDM to CTF etc.

Any modes you want. Flow is described in the news post on NN. It does vary map to map and will probably be one of the hardest things to judge but between the 5 judges, I think we'll be able to come to a fair balance on the points earned.

This is really up to the mappers but yes, it would be nice.

I'm hoping some fun classics will be improved or otherwise fixed. However, this contest is not limited to just remaking, remixing or otherwise improving maps. Mappers may create a map from scratch.

THE EMPHASIS is on proper packaging.

Also, you can collaborate with other players and divide the points :).

That would be awesome. I love your maps. You are truly a master of multiple perspectives. Too few maps have this touch that gently throw you into different situations you can lose yourself in. Your kind words of motivation from times past have kept my ninja heart strong.

Thank you and good luck (if you decide to enter, which I hope you will).

  • Contest over 2/15/09 -- that is Feb 15th

I've been quite busy in some other projects, including the one very important task of rebuilding/upgrading my old computer. After learning more about Linux and having everything else in order for the hardware to rebuild my old computer, I've recently taken the time to migrate and separate/organize my software better.

Having a clean operating system with a better understanding of how I should organize things, both visually and logically has given me a stronger idea of my priorities. This has helped me organize some of the other projects surrounding Nexuiz and the Ninjaz. You'd be surprised how much time can go into admining some game servers.

Over the past few months I've spread myself across many different projects surrounding both communities and including other open-source supporting ones. With my old computer a bit unstable and my motherboard RMA not going as smooth as a good company would let it (no bias against EVGA here), it was discouraging to get involved in the mapping process myself. However!! I've recently started mapping again now that I have these computers sorted out and time on my side :).

    Image

I'm starting to finalize my first map zion to get a feel for my style again before I try applying my abilities to remixing some of the other maps I had in mind. With only ~18 days left in the contest, it's a little tight, especially considering all the recent brush work I did is failing but I still have the urge to finish these things in time.

I hope others are aware the deadline is approaching and perhaps kicking it into high gear.

I'd like to remind everyone to submit their maps to the Contest thread (or here if you _really_ want to) by 2/15/09 -- that is Feb 15th

  • Which reminds me.

I have another entry, which is Symdusty v2r1. It just needs compiling and packing at the moment. Cept I cant get it to compile (see my thread in support/bugs).

Hopefully I will have time to do one more map after that.

  • The winner of the community choice goes to Moo and PCLizard, check the NN thread for details and an explanation of their prize.

Congratulations to everyone, there were certainly some exceptional entries and I believe this contest was successful in not only raising awareness of packaging but in other aspects of make making including collaboration.

    Awesome work guys!

I'm still awaiting the grades from the other judges (whom are very busy) but when they are tallied I will announce the official winners of the contest and send out the prizes.
