  • yeah, that sounds cool, however there are a lot of information that I would like to know:

    - accurate dates (when will it start ? how long do two people have time to play a match in the final rounds ? Preround is supposed to be only one weekend iirc)
    - what are these "fixed" server settings ? Please don't tell me something like " completely standard" settings (which means: no antilag), otherwise I don't need any further Information anyway (since I wouldn't play w/o antilag :) )
    - is there a least a list of the mappool of which PC-Max will randomly chose maps ? I fear the worst, that PC-MAX will chose "stupid" maps ... maybe they should stick to the current 1on1 ladder mappool :o
    - what is the winning condition of a match ? There is a rule that states "The participant having the most kills, wins, and proceeds to the next round". This is known to be an unfair System actually, since a player might win map "a" with 8:4 and lose map "b" with 10:18 => the player would have lost by total points (18:24) but would actually have won because he won map 1 with a 2:1 ratio, but was beaten on map 2 only by ratio 1,8/1. The Problem is that different maps offer more or less frags (e.g. comparing "Basement" with "Aneurysm"). And what happens if there's a draw of the total points ?
    - is the participation of this tournament restricted to people living in germany ? or may Kojak also win something ?

  • I'd say those are good questions to ask.

There's a discussion thread over at pc-max.de (linked on the contest page) and I guess it'd make sense to bring those things to attention there.

  • Very very cool! I guess we have to bow to SavageX for getting those guys to support Nexuiz and start this contest. Should we try to advertice this thing any further? The golem.de guys have been very helpful with posting Nexuiz-release-news on their page. Maybe they are interested in this this too.

I also posted a nice litte response into their forum. Oh we should also advertise it on the pn.de page and forum :) I Hope Green was faster then me :P Nope.. so i took the liberty.

Oh Urmel.. why that? Owning us is no thing to be ashamed of..

  • Good questions GreEn`mArine! I am curious what they will respond...

I will participate if the dates (that will hopefully be revealed in the response to green´s questions) allow me to, although i can imagine already which players will occupy the top places ;) ,just to show that there is a living community belonging to Nexuiz.

Urmel... wrote:Good news for all of you: I won't be participating 8)

    ...phew ;)
seriously: Why not? I think everybody whos time allows it should sign up, as it is a good oppurtunity to advertise Nexuiz some more, and have some fun!
There can only be one winner and only a few players can serioulsy hope to be it, but that wont stop me and shouldnt stop anybody to sign up there, show some new players that just try Nexuiz because of the tournament what great game it is and what nice people we are ;) and most important have a good time playing Nexuiz :)

  • Err, I was not involved with getting this contest started.

AFAIK this is mostly Strahlemann's effort :)

edit: Actually this is not Strahlemann's effort, so don't pester him on this ;)

Oh, and spread the word in the german gaming world.

  • /me pushes Savage out of the way and starts a furrious search for Strahlemann to pay him tribute :P

If we make it too popular we'll get more then 64 players and all the really good players will have bad luck when it comes to the lot ;)

  • - accurate dates (when will it start ? how long do two people have time to play a match in the final rounds ? Preround is supposed to be only one weekend iirc)

The date(s) aren't fixed or known yet, it also depends on whether the registration must be extended due to little registrations
    - what are these "fixed" server settings ?

They are going to take the 1on1 ladder server config :)
    - is there a least a list of the mappool of which PC-Max will randomly chose maps ?

    The maps aren't selected yet
    - what is the winning condition of a match ?

Hmm, no clear response of that, at least I couldn't understand it ;(
    - is the participation of this tournament restricted to people living in germany ? or may Kojak also win something ?

All players are allowed to participate, however there "might" be problems with the coupon-price, as the online shop for which these coupons are valid ships from germany

On this page (scroll to the bottom!) you can see the countries where they are shipping the stuff, all other countries will not be able to receive anything from that shop!

  • Nah i do not think thats a good idea. Even when more then 64 players sign up i'd rather fall out then create some tensions by someone being prefered.
And after all 64 is quite a huge number for a indepentend game.. (standing eye-to-eye with reality) Though i'd like to get proven wrong :P

  • Wow, very cool!

But, dont know, maybe, someones scan win easyer then others. Nexuiz is an open source project, isnt it? And what about modifycing ur game settings, like: power up the nex gun or make a little splash damage for the nex? For example, there are MANY possibilities, and in the rules doesnt stand, that you have to make a demo file and upload it, and what about wallhacks (isnt a problem for those, who have the source files and are able to edit them)?

  • 2.1 contains a dozen of anti-cheat protections, didn't you know that ? nah, just kidding. People won't have to upload demos, although I'd suggest to PC-Max that the players should do them and keep them in case of problems, as it is done in the ladder. Cheating cannot be prevented, it can jsut be detected

  • You can't powerup your machine gun or anything as those things are in total control of the server. One would need to hack and manipulate the server in order to gain some advantage..
You are however right that it might be possible to create a aim or wallhack cheat. For that reason one has to be able to show screenshots (and on demand a demo) in the 1on1 ladder and i think it might be a good idea to also make this rule in that contest. Its not the best solution but even in games with so called 'anti-cheat-tools' there is cheating. The biggest archivment of those tools is to make people feel better and mostly it does that too good as people feel 'oh i'm save there is some anticheat'. Sure those tools make it harder but not impossible. I'd rather trust people and watch a demo when in doubt then getting too confident in tools :)
Also those tools increase the network traffic, raise cpu usage, might produce false positives (i got kicked a few times while trying quake4 and i'm for sure not cheating :) ) and those tools are often unpractical for opensource games as people will compile engines them self now and then for what ever reason and might get refused by a server then..

Are you REALLY sure about that? I saw one guy with a splash-nex-gun and he said, he changed some settings etc. and if you would save the server, there are enought possibilaties to get those files... I dont want to say, that Im a hacker, but I know a few possibillities to get the servers master password, excpeccaly at game servers... just using the Terminal (mac) or DOS (win32), so ;) ... but that dont mean that Im cheating in any game!!! and in warss, too!!!

esteel wrote:One would need to hack and manipulate the server in order to gain some advantage..

    Yeah, thats right ;)

If you have that connections, say the PC-Max team, that they add a rule to the rules: making a demo and uploading it to the server or to any server, bzw. demo is needed ;)

Bad choice of prize perhaps? I think it's quite obvious that an nVIDIA card is the best option for Nexuiz as it's OpenGL. For Linux users it's more obvious as ATi's drivers are still hopeless.

  • Well, the sponsor donating those ATI cards (PowerColor) only seems to have ATI cards.

    http://de.powercolor.com/products.asp

The X1600 should perform decently with Nexuiz - and if you happen to be a Linux user you can still opt for ebay and get a Nvidia card instead ;)

  • So what is the schedule saying? - will the tournament be played with 2.0 or 2.1?
As this means damage through floor disabled/enabled it has quite some influence on the game.
I dont think it will influence peoples choice whether to take part or not, i am just curious ;)

  • Hey now,

well, I'm that guy from PC-Max who set up the contest.
First of all I'm glad, that there is such a big response to that contest!

    Some answers to your questions:
    - if there is a release of a newer Nexuiz version, it will surely be the new version which will be played at the contest.

    - at the moment there is no chance to get a card with a nvidia gpu chip, but we will try our best to get an alternative card.

    - we know about the cheating-problem and we're still thinking about a rule to prevent it. Probably all pleyers have to make a demo and if there is a concretely suspicion, the accused player has to upload his demo.

So far, if there are more questions about the contest just ask, I try my best to answer them clearly ;)

  • k0jak: it is not double elimination:
as you know the tournamen has 64 players. The tournament will start using Single-Elimination (K.O.) rounds until 4 players are left.

Once the 4 players are left, every players plays against every other player. the scores will be put into a table, and after all matches are played the resulting table will show who is first/second/third

...did I lose you once again ? ^^
