  • Hello

I've tried Nexuiz and it looks like it's one of the best, if not even
the best free FPS's for GNU/Linux around. However, I have a weird issue
    with it.

The first time I ran it worked fine and FPS was great on 800x600
resolution (which is good for me), with default effects and other
settings. It looked good. However, second time it didn't work properly.

The reason is unknown, which is why I'm posting this..

The game starts, but when I try to actually go playing (load a map) it
starts loading and then crashes with the following terminal output:

Note that this is the output from when I start nexuiz from the terminal
to the point when it crashes (when I try to load the map). The last
    parts are probably most relevant.

What I find weird about this is that the first time this happened I removed the .nexuiz folder in my home directory (hence pretty much resetting everything, and it worked again.
Why is that I have no idea. It is weird because all that the .nexuiz
folder really contains is a simple preferences file (config.cfg).

However, this time I tried even that and it didn't even want to enter the game, let alone let me start a map. So right now it looks like it just randomly chooses when to crash, confusing the hell out of me.

    What gives?

  • I'm sorry guys. It appears that the issue was simply that my swap wasn't on so it ran out of memory.

This swap issue happens with edgy all the time for me and I'm not sure why. I always have to do swapon myself, and I sometimes forget. That's it.

So it appears Nexuiz is fine. :)

Mods, actually, feel free to delete this thread. ;)

    Best.

I'd suggest keeping it actually. Running out of swap is bad and it's good to have a thread on this issue here just in case anyone else has a similar problem with.

Maybe someone here can help you fix your problem too....

Is your swap partition listed in /etc/fstab?

But i hope the swap isn't needed for Nexuiz itself. If it is, Nexuiz would run quite jerky. Try to decrease texture quality if that becomes an issue.

Hmm the textures are already cut in half.. but if there graphic card and computer memory is really low that might be needed indeed.

  • It is not running out of swap, just out of normal memory since I only have 256 MB. The swap not turning on is actually an Ubuntu related problem. I just have to do it manually. It is in fstab, but it doesn't come up on boot.

Anyway, with swap on everything works great. There were some annoying slowdowns when alot of bots are shooting (all those light effects), but once I turned off most of the extra effects it runs very smooth.

Now if it could only be easier to beat these bots in the 7th and 8th level. It's incredibly hard. :P

  • Hm... 256MB is really low... Soon Nexuiz 2.2 will be released, maybe CheapAlert makes us a TinyNex again which consists of a stripped down Nexuiz (like downsampled textures)?
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.
