Nexuiz crashing on debian sid , radeon OSS Driver

  • HI.
    I have some problems with Nexuiz 2.2 on an debian sid machine. I use an ATi X700Pro and the OSS radeon Drivers. The game starts but it crashes when i try to shoot. This happens in both the GLX and the SDL Version. I have tried to install it from the debian packages and from the zip-File. I have the same results on both installations.

  • When you try to shoot? That's weird. Have you tried running a demo:

    If that runs successfully then it would be an input related problem. If not it's a sound/graphics problem. Try running with the -nosound option and see if disabling sound helps. If so, it's a sound problem. Try running -window to get it in a window, it has fixed a couple of weird bugs for some people.

    Are the ATi official drivers OK for this device? I'm not too sure of the coverage of the open source driver as it may only be usable for the older R300 cards.

  • The demo crashes, too.
    I have Nexuiz already runnig in a window

    when trying the -nosound option i noticed the following (i think it was there before, but i noticed it only now):

    this looks to me like a problem with the graphics driver

    The official drivers work with this device. (i had them installed before, the i reinstalled sid and I did not install the proprietary drivers)
    I would like to use the OSS drivers because they are the only drivers for my Card which Support AIGLX and Beryl.

  • Does it still crash if you disable "OpenGL 2.0 Shaders" (Options -> Effects)?
    In either case you should write a bug report to debian (together with a gdb backtrace)

    install gdb and run the following in a terminal:

    $ nexuiz    # once nexuiz has crashed, there should be a pretty large file called core, core.3924 or something like that
    $ gdb /usr/lib/games/nexuiz/nexuiz.bin core.3924
    (gdb) bt
    # copy the output to a textfile and include it to your bug report
    (gdb) quit

    No idea, i sold my ATI card when i switched to linux, so i have no experience with r300 drivers.
    But the backtrace should indicate whether the crash is caused by nexuiz or the driver.
    ATIs proprietary driver usually works with nexuiz, however it's considerably slower than the windows driver and crashes with OpenGL 2 shaders enabled on some systems...

  • I found out, the default setting for deluxemapping is ON, also when resetting to defaults. That will make nexuiz crash on my system.

    I have x86_64 Linux system with ATI propiertary fglrx driver v 8.29.6

    Having
    r_glsl_deluxemapping "0"
    in .nexuiz/data/config.cfg
    makes it better. (And also disabling Bloom makes fps tolerable.)

    Fedora still provides only v 2.2.1 of Nexuiz. Is there some big bug fixes in v2.2.2 so one should try to recompile from sources? Some servers say they are running v 2.2.2

  • Interesting, i see no reason why gl_deluxemapping should crash Nexuiz. It just makes it do bumpmapping on the whole map from the info in the light map and not just from the realtime lights.
    Maybe the free ati drivers have problems with large shader programs.. No idea how to test this though.

    noone was using fglrx, not the free r300 drivers. And fglrx is known to crash while compiling opengl shaders on some systems...
    div0 bought a cheap radeon 9600 to investigate this months ago, but afaik he wasn't able to reproduce the crash.

  • Well I tried again, and yes it seems only be this deluxemapping ON/OFF which makes it "crash" or not.

  • I filed a bug report for the r300 driver - but completely messed it up by copying in that last trace (that's from ATI's drivers, not from the DRI one!).

    D'oh, I feel like an idiot. That bug report is spammed with wrong information. It's not DRI r300 having a GLSL problem (that one seems to have different problem), it's fglrx having a GLSL problem.

    <MrCooper> which version of libgl1-mesa-dri does he have? 6.5.1-0.5 ensures building with -fno-strict-aliasing, the lack of which could cause all sorts of weird crashes

    Did you file a bug report at ati/amd yet? I'm not sure if Nexuiz is big enough to make them consider a bugfix with its at least a start.. i guess other games would also have problems then.. And their driver is the right place for a bugfix instead of some ugly workaround in the engine (which LordHavoc does not like btw)
