  • Hi guys,

A friend of mine told me about Nexuiz the other day and so i decided to try it(Seeing as its open source and everything). I downloaded it, that was fine. I unzipped it, that went without a hitch. I went into the Nexuiz folder on my desktop and dragged it into my apps folder. I opened the Nexuiz again and looked for the mac .app file. I clicked on Nexuiz-SDL and it switched into full screen mode. The screen stayed balck for a while and didnt show any signs of life. this was a problem. i could see and move my cursor but i couldnt see anything else. Does anyone know what is wrong or what i have done wrong?

PS I am using an iMac G5 1.8Ghz with MacOSX 10.3.9.

  • I ain't got no plan about macs, but that sounds like You logged onto a server with a special map who have to be downloaded from somewhere else first.

Did You install the 1.5 or the 1.21?

  • You didn't get a screen like this:
    Image
    by any chance?
If you did, try starting Nexuiz with "-basedir /path/to/Nexuiz/data".

If your screen stays completely black, can you start Nexuiz with "-condebug" as parameter and post the logfile (~/.nexuiz/data/qconsole.log on Linux, i think this is also true for MacOS)?

  • If you use 1.5 please not that the startup time can be... extreme :) On my Athlon64 3200+ with 1GB ram it takes almost 30 seconds to start. Have you tried just waiting for a while?

Just unzip it and run the Nexuiz-SDL.app... There isn't much you could have done wrong... A common problem for windows users is, that sometimes winzip doesn't create subfolders, but if you have a directory "Nexuiz/data" with a "data<realeasedate>.pk3" in it, you've done everthing right.

    Sorry to hear that...
What kind of graphics card does your mac have? A quick google search came up with two alternatives: Radeon 9600 or GeforceFX 5200. Both cards a bit slow with Nexuiz but afaik it's possible to play with them if you turn everything down (i got Nexuiz running quite well on a p4 1.8GHz, with 512MB RAM & a Geforce 2MX).

You can try esteel's low effects settings, that should speed things up a bit :)

  • GF5200 is running well, also the Radeon 9600 and other low value cards if You don't enable too many effects.

BTW did anybody else but /me notice that loading takes longer the bigger the RAM is ?

  • I do not think my tweaks speedup the startup of nexuiz.. Sounds like some issue with compiling the shaders to me. Willis said something about a fix for this in 1.5.1. I myself never had problems with a long startup time so i have no idea if this does indeed help.

I think there are still some issues with the current 1.5.1 release candidate but you might try to download it and see if it does start faster then the current 1.5 version. It is also interesting to get a mac user to test this. But please notice its a release candidate some things might be broken (please report them here). And you will also NOT be able to join the online servers because of the version check. But a quick local try with 'instant action' or 'create game' should work fine..

    Here you can download it:

I haven't tested it (and i'm to lazy to remove half of my RAM just to test that :P), but the loading times in 1.5.1 will nbe significantly better :)
I tested it yesterday: 1.5 needed 27sec to start, the 1.5.1 (svn build) needed 17 seconds.

It should be perfectly capable of running the game, but you might want to turn off some of the effects, like bloom, particles and Real-Time lights.

However this should not affect the loading time, and 10 minutes is.. well.. a lil much. Do you have lots of other stuff running at the same time? If you have nothing else running its a lil weird that it takes this long to load. Is it possivble for you to download an older version like 1.2.1 and try that? or the newest version (in development) as previously mentioned.

  • nexuiz is running pretty fast on my 2 macs. (about 15 seconds) :
    - G4 bi-1,42 // ATI Radeon 9000 pro 64Mo // 1Go RAM // osx 10.4.5
    - G5 bi-2,7 // ATI Radeon 9650 256Mo // 2Go RAM // osx 10.4.5

The G4 shouldn't be more powerful than the iMac G5 1,8GHz...

Perhaps Panther is a problem ?
You could try running Tiger on a firewire disk... (means you've got a friend who owns tiger, and an empty external firewire drive...)
