Why is Nexiuz on Windows more responsive for me?

  • A few months ago, I setup my laptop as dual boot with Ubuntu edgy. Things seemed to be working well. I got the Nvidia drivers installed and the NDISWrapper (yes, I'm using a WLAN connection...nothing I can do about that right now). Then I took a break from Nexuiz for a couple of months because of school. I am back to playing Nexuiz again for the past month or so and during that time Nexuiz was upgrade from 2.2 to 2.2.3. I also notice that I'm having a very difficult time landing with the Nex I didn't get it. I read that the reload time of the Nex was extended, but it also seemed like the Nex had a bit of a delay when I fired. I was just unable to get it to aim up. If I hit anyone with it, it was luck.

So, I played with Nexuiz like this for the last few weeks. Tonight, I booted up to my Windows partition just to compare. I immediately felt that Nexuiz was more responsive with just moving around the maps. Then I got to use the Nex and I was landing again. Wow. I mean, it's not like night and day, but it's a noticeable difference that really affects my gameplay. For a while, I was avoiding using the Nex because I couldn't get it to work for me.

So, anyone have any ideas of why there might be this difference? Is it a difference of the NDISWrapper compared to a native driver? Dave mentioned something abouta mouse setting. I'm going to compare the config files and see if I changed the config on my windows version.

  • Could you tell us if you have 'lag' when firing all weapons or just the nex? If its the first maybe your X has '3 button emulation' enabled. Thats a feature for laptops and in general 2 button mice were pressing mouse1 and mouse2 at the same time act like you pressed mouse3. There is a small timeout during which you have to press those buttons and because of that the button press is also delayed because X will have to wait that time to know if you also pressed the other button to send mouse3 instead of the real button. Many X configs still have that active by default.
Other then that i can only think of the usual things to try.. sdl vs glx and trying gl_finish 1

  • well, I recently installed ubuntu feisty herd 4 on my main box, and it's been working fine, however I do notice it does seem to play better on my windows partition. Mabie this is because I'm using beryl, I'm not sure. The strange thing is that it won't launch without beryl running.

  • The last time i checked my debian was slightly faster then windows but its also some time since i last used windows.
I can hardly imagine Nexuiz will not run without beryl.. maybe you also changed some config things for beryl that 3d games also need? Its running fine here with gnome ;)

  • using gnome with beryl. the one thing that keeps me using windows is xfire, and that alone really sucks. Without beryl though my screen just flickers and then I'm back at the gnome desktop. weird.
