  • Very cool. I have to say I am impressed. I play Xbox typically, and don't game on the PC much, but I am very impressed with Nexuiz. I have only had one problem, and it's not really a problem since Nexuiz crashes when I quit. Like I said, not really a problem since I want to quit anyway. So far, very reliable during game play.

My only suggestion is better support for game controllers. I'm so used to Xbox, that using the keyboard and mouse to play is tough for me. I'd like to have the best of both worlds. Use an Xbox 360 controller and use the keyboard for other commands and typing text etc.

    Thanks.

Hm, luckily it's only crashing on shutdown, but that shouldn't happend either :(
Would you mind sending me a crash report? Assuming you are using windows, you get such a report by:
    1) Click Start->Run, and enter drwtsn32
    2) Click Ok in the next window, run Nexuiz and wait for the crash
    3) Go to "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson" (some folders of that path may be hidden or have a translated name if you're using a non-english version), there should be a file called "drwtsn32.log", email that to <my nickname>@planetnexuiz.de along with the engine's build date (you'll see that when you open the ingame console (press shift+esc))

Joysticks are already supported and i don't think gamepads are handled much different, so there's a pretty good chance your gamepad will work. Just have a look at this post http://www.forums.alientrap.local/viewtopi ... 4226#14226 and give it a try ;)

No offense, dude, but any kind of joystick or game controller is far inferior to a keyboard and mouse for first person shooters. I've never understood why anyone would bother to make, let alone play, an FPS on a console at all. If you use your XBox controller in Nexuiz online, you will get thrashed.

Better to learn to use the keyboard and mouse. Once you get the hang of it you won't want to go back. Ever.

  • No offense taken. I don't want to start a debate about this, since I'm sure it's been debated before.
You say it's inferior, but I think it all comes down to what you are used to. With a keyboard you can't walk slow. It's run, or not. Also, with Xbox FPS games, you can change the sensitivity of how fast you turn etc. I just think it's more logical feeling to use 2 thumbsticks for movement, and looking rather WASD and mouse. Just doesn't feel natural to me. I get thrashed anyway. I actually have preferred to play online with Nexuiz rather than Halo2 lately. There is soooo much trash talking on Xbox live. It's nice to see "gg" or "lol" at the end of a game with Nexuiz.

I have found the "joy" commands and was able to get the left thumbstick working, but couldn't get the right thumbstick to do anything. I'm going to keep trying though. I am using both Windows and Ubuntu. I prefer to use it in Ubuntu actually. I think it performs better. I will do the Dr. Watson thing and get back to you.

    Thanks for the input.

With this baby I can, at least on some games, have a sort of speed control  :

Unfortunatly, gamepads have alot fewer buttons. Analog movement does have its pluses, I must agree with you there.

I don't think you'll be able to use a stick for movement, since the movement is designed for keyboard input. According wikipedia, there should be a directional pad, that might work ;)

From memory, bind "SHIFT" "+walk" would do the job. I'm a bit confused as to what real benefit walking has, since footsteps aren't enabled by default anyway. Rather like crouching, it's simply something which I never find occasion to use in a fast-paced deathmatch. Running is an advantage, since speed is your friend. This is why I say gamepads are terrible—they are slow. Particularly, they're slow to accurately aim. Why do you think that most console FPSs use auto-aim?

I do agree with the comments about the community, though. Most Nexuiz players are very friendly and enjoy taking a good thrashing as much as dealing it out. I've never come across a sore loser on any servers yet, and many people are openly complimentary if someone gives them a good hiding.

"+walk" won't do anything in Nexuiz, there is only running and crouching.

  • Well thats not totally true.. Nexuiz is using a quake engine so +speed (not walk) tries to make you go faster *. Quake did have normal speed and full speed with +speed or you used 'always running' which raised cl_forwardspeed and cl_backspeed from 200 to 400 if i remember correctly. Nexuiz does not have a always running option, basicly its always on. So in both cases +speed does not do anything as you can't run faster then the server allows you to.

    * well +speed multiplies your current speed with cl_movespeedkey which is 2 by default. If you set it to 0.5 pressing +speed will make you only go half as fast.

  • I also have had the Nexuiz crash on quitting issue (win XP home edition), even with the newest Nexuiz.

I just ignored it, but I'll try the Dr Watson thing later tonight after work.
