[solved]Only 50fps with latest drivers

If you've had any problems with Nexuiz, or would like to report bugs, post here.

  • Hi,

Yesterday i installed the latest nvidia drivers (Forceware 93.71) for my GT6800 and now the max fps i get in Nexuiz is 50fps.

Monitor refresh-rate with 1024x768 is still 85Hz, so i guess there must be a limitation somewhere else.

    Please help.

  • buy a new computer :D

Nah, just jokin'. Could you please be so kind and give us more information about your hardware, OS, and what amout of fps could you run before installing teh new Foreware?

Btw I run the 93.71 driver since it's out (I have a GF6600 and a 7600GT), and haven't suffered any performance loss since.

Are you running a Dual core CPU by accident?

  • the drivers by default override the game's settings for some stuff like anti-aliasing. did you disable those?

even with a dual core CPU It should be fine, I have one in my main box.

  • OS: Windows XP Pro SP2
    GFX: nvidia GeForce 6800GT
    AMD Athlon 64 3000+
    1 GB RAM

    Installed Drivers: Forceware 93.71
    Before: Forceware 84.21

The fact is that i constantly get 50fps, even when looking into space where i got around 120fps before. It's like someone set the maxfps to 50 in Nexuiz (btw. is there such a command ? can't find it right now...)
In other games this fps-drop doesn't appear with the latest drivers. (e.g. quake 3 still 90 fps with maxfps set to 85), so i guess it has something to do with Nexuiz, and not with the hardware or the drivers.

  • Maybe the graphics driver forces vsync for some reason, but also syncs where it renders to a texture for HDR? Try disabling HDR and bloom then.
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • ok cl_maxfps is indeed 1000.

And i disabled the vsync and HDR and Bloom and even tried a resolution of 640x480.
    Always the same: 50 fps.
    (monitor refresh-rate is 85Hz @ 1024x768 and 120Hz @ 640x480)

Btw.: Having VSync enabled wouldn't cause the game to constantly run at 50 fps imo.

I think i'll reinstall some older drivers again since i've no idea where this 50fps limitation comes from.

    Thanks anyways 8)

  • Ok, tried nexuiz.exe instead of nexuiz-sdl.exe and fps is back to normal (mostly over 100fps).

Now the old problem with nexuiz.exe is that i can't get it work in fullscreen mode (it's always windowed even if i change it in the autoexec.cfg) and i can't change the resolution to sth. higher then 640x480.

Well, this kind of problem has been there ever since for me, so i sticked to nexuiz-sdl.exe.

    Any ideas  ?

Edit: Screen resolution can be changed ingame to higher resolutions like 1024x768 etc., but i can't get it fullscreen. And every time i start it again (with autoexec.cfg and config.cfg being write-protected) the resolution is again set to 640x480.

    This is my autoexec.cfg:

    Code: Select all
    vid_fullscreen "1"
    vid_height "768"
    vid_width "1024"

  • This is sooo fuckin weird and unique, I just don't get what the hell is so different about your system comparing to all others I ran/installed Nexuiz. I think you run a special application that causes this trouble with Nexuiz. I have to sleep over that. :?

Cant you take your rig to munich next time you come home? :)

  • Hehe, yeah i don't get it either.
I'm in munich again next weekend, but i won't take my rig with me ;) Have to "after-celebrate" my birthday :D

But if you happen to be in Ulm you're welcome to take a look ;)

    P.S.: I guess i'll reinstall older drivers

  • I installed the old Forceware 84.21 and guess what: It didn't help... :x
    Very very bad.
And the change of the bpp didn't help either :( (tried both 16-bit and 32-bit for nexuiz and desktop)

So i have to solve this problem somehow but need to learn for my exam this tuesday.
You'll hear again from my weird rig next week i guess :?

Thanks for your patience and help so far

  • Backup everything.
Download ubuntu or debian and burn them on an RW
    Delete windows to oblivion.
Install linux with latest nvidia drivers from nvidia.
    Launch nexuiz.
Be happy with fullscreen and more then 100 FPS

  • Befire deleting windows you have to know: Linux means pain! I wouldnt believe Sxen before I tried it myself. It was a torture to even install teh nvidia driver, and it worked for a few days only... :P [/flame]

If you can have an old (!!!) video adapter available, I'd suggest you deinstall all nvidia driver stuff, replace the 6800GT with the old crap, start windows, shut it down again and build the 6800GT in again, install the current Forceware and look what happends. Should'nt take more than 15 minutes and will work hopefully.

  • Problem solved !

divVerent wrote:Maybe the graphics driver forces vsync for some reason

Should have read that one again. Thanks diV

It's now working with nexuiz-sdl.exe again. In fact it really was the vSync.
But i could swear that i disabled it before i reinstalled the drivers, and it didn't work.
Well i tried it again with Forceware 93.71 and created a new Profile (god these profiles are a messy thing) and disabled vsync there.

Tada: now i get constant 85 fps (like my monitor-refresh-rate)
Ok, i had more before, but i'm glad i can play fluently again.

Btw.: I had to hack my registry to avoid that ol' 60Hz Monitor-refresh-rate bug.

Well, whatver. Thanks guys for your suggestions 8)
