Black Screen & Hang w/ Vista x64 & Nexiuz 2.2.3

  • Hey, I've been playing Nexiuz with my Vista x64 system. I was using the previous versions of Nexiuz without any problems. I recently installed the 2.2.3 release and now Nexiuz will not boot. I get a black screen without sound or anything. I have to open Task Manager and close the process to get it to go away.

I have an ATI Radeon X1900 w/ the 7.4 Catalyst drivers. I also recently bought a Hanns-G widescreen monitor. My video card driver settings are all set to their defaults. I'm running the April release of DirectX.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm going to download and reinstall my video card drivers and DirectX just to see if that does anything.

    Thanks! :D

I'm sorry. I forgot to mention that I did try the SDL binary. Same exact thing. I'm stumped!

  • Try the following: open your windows explorer, go into the Nexuiz directory, right click on nexuiz.exe (or nexuiz-sdl.exe and choose create shortcut. The right click on the new shortcut and add -notexturenonpoweroftwo to the end of the 'target' line. Make sure there is a space before the -notexturenonpoweroftwo. and then double click that shortcut to start Nexuiz with that option and see if that works. (other wise try -safe which disables a lot stuff and might be slow but we can see if it works at all)
And please report back if that helped.

  • Wait! I just noticed something! I had just recently downloaded the full 2.2.3 version of Nexuiz. However, my download is only 193MB. The normal size is about 270MB! The ZIP file isn't corrupt. So, maybe someone accidentally uploaded the wrong file for a day, took it down, and then put the right file up? The fact that the ZIP file isn't corrupt, will open, and unpack means it's not a problem with the downloading process.

I'll be able to check the game later tonight once I've finished downloading the normal 270MB version, but I'm fairly certain it will work just fine since I was missing 80MB of data!

No, the uploaded files are correct and weren't changed. You are confusing 2.2.3 (nexuiz-223.zip, 191MB) with the just released 2.3 (nexuiz-23.zip, 273MB) ;)

Oh, I see... well, I'm back to square-one anyway. The 273MB one craps out, too. :(

Thanks for your help! I tried both and even safe mode doesn't help. When I try to start it in safe mode, I can see a small window begin to appear on the screen and then I get a popup message about the program crashing. The module that it points its finger at is NTDLL.DLL in both cases, if that helps.

Again, thanks for trying to help me out. Nexuiz is very fun and it sucks not being able to play it.

I have tried using the CCC 7.4 and 7.5 drivers from ATI. Same thing. In fact, I got crazy and installed Windows XP on this PC and I'm getting that same problems. It must be some sort of incompatibility introduced with the ATI drivers and Nexuiz, right?

I have installed Windows XP and do not use the Catalyst Control Center. Just the video drivers are installed. It still does the same thing:

Nexuiz.exe goes black then crashes siting NTDLL.DLL

Nexiuz-SDL.exe goes black then back to desktop without crashing.

Nexuiz-SDL.exe -safe pops a small 640x480 window up for a split-second and then disappears.

I'm using the 7.5 ATI drivers. I have nothing else loaded. :(

I already have. Whatever the problem, it's not Nexuiz's fault or my computer's fault. I used to play it on this very machine. It must be something ATI started including with their drivers because I hadn't played Nexuiz in about 2 iterations of the CCC drivers. I'll downgrade and see if it starts working. :(

Sounded like you did not have the CCC installed and thus could not test that setting. But iirc you should still be able to set this in some way. Not sure if you tested that.

  • Alright, I have installed ATI 7.2 drivers. Nexuiz works fine.

I installed the ATI 7.4 drivers. Nexuiz won't boot.

I installed the ATI 7.5 drivers. Nexuiz still won't boot.

I downgrade to the ATI 7.2 drivers. Nexuiz begins to function again.

I read the driver release info and discovered that as of 7.3 (which no one used because it caused a pre-boot BSOD for many people) ATI had made a change so that OpenGL would function correctly in CrossFire mode. I do not have CrossFire but prior to that change, every other version of the ATI drivers worked fine with Nexuiz.

    Just thought I'd share.

  • Well, all we can do is complain and hope they look into it. ATI is all about DirectX, it seems.

  • Ah, I figured it out. There seems to be some sort of ongoing screw up by ATI for more than one release of their Catalyst driver suite. A file in the root directory of the system partition called "moduleName.txt" is opened when OpenGL games are initialized. However, it does not allow Users to open and write to the text file so *somehow* Nexiuz won't initialize. I reset the ACL, auto-adding default inhereted ACEs, and changed the Users permissions on the file to Modify and Nexuiz instantly started working.

I found on the Rage3D forums (where ATI people congregate) that this is a quasi-known f-up that has been around for a while. Incredible!

Next PC I build is going to be Intel CPU, NVIDIA chipset, and GeForce video card!
