OK, pulled the synaptic software off (just another abstraction layer for the mouse driver so you can tailor the mousepad and such), but that didn't help. Using the default current ps/2 mouse driver. Tried pulling brick out of docking station and using a mouse on usb, same difference. So I'm still thinking it's the laptop itself.
