  • System Specs:
    P4 2.8
    2GB DDR2
    ATI X800

My computer runs great with a variety of games, however with Nexiuz I keep having the same problem. I suspected it was winxp so I did a reinstall and sure enough I am having the same problem.

What happens is I launch Nexiuz and it changes the resolution on the computer and then just sits there. While it sits there I can just look at my desktop in that lower resolution. I will alt-tab out and back to nexiuz, and the menu music will play. I move the mouse around and I can hear it going over options in the menu. During this I can still only view my desktop at this lower resolution. All I can do from there is ctrl-alt-del and force quit nexiuz.

Any ideas? Need any more info? Thank you for your time!

  • Again it would be so good if Nexuiz wouldn't start fullscreened by default :?

Have a look at the \data folder in Nexuiz, if you're lucky, you'll find a file config.cfg. If you don't find it, just create a txt file and rename it to config.cfg. Open it with WordPad. Add the line vid_fullscreen "0", save and close the file. Then start Nexuiz again and have a look if some error message or whatever pops up...

What you could do before is get sure that the color depth of your desktop is set to 32bit. 16-bit ain't a problem in general, but with ATI drivers you can never be sure...

  • I suppose he uses at least some ATI drivers, other games wouldn't run very well otherwise...

But other games might not need OpenGL...

  • ATI cards (and Nvidias as well iirc) don't even run the windows desktop well without drivers. I'm sure he's got drivers installed

    Reread esteel's post carefully ;)
His point wasn't that no drivers are installed, it was that the windoze update version of the ati driver might be installed, which lacks OpenGL support.

Tbh I never had the crazy idea to look for ANY drivers on the M$ Update site except maybe a M$ Sidewinder Joystick

I went in and edited the config file as you requested. When I started the game it started in a smaller window but without a menu. Sound was playing and I could hear the menu items again. See screenshot:
    http://www.tkdan.com/tmp/ss.JPG
(screen shot is kinda crazy from my dual monitor setup. but you can see what it is doing.)

I have the latest ATI drivers installed as well as the latest drivers for the rest of the system. Games such as battlefield 2 and halflife 2 work fine without any problems.

Any more ideas? Thanks for the responses![/img]

  • It appears you're starting Nexuiz with nexuiz, instead try starting the game with nexuiz-sdl.

  • Actually I avoid ATI bashing in general. Their drivers make it hard to not do so

  • So, I've got the same problem as tkdan. I've also got an X800 and dual monitors. Also like tkdan, if I disable my second monitor Nexuiz runs fine. Disabling my second monitor isn't really a good solution since I end up having to move all my windows back over afterwards. I don't think the problem exists solely in ATI's drivers, not that I'm saying they don't suck. I've been able to play other games that use openGL.

Any other ideas about what to do? Any chance of maybe a dev chiming in?

  • See why peeps have problems, having the best Nvidia card and system isnt the awnser,I use linux on dual boot with windoze and use a cheap 128 ati graphics card as the driver config from livna works fine in linux as does the game,so bite me windoze.
Have found nexuiz an excellent deathmatch platform and apart from my modded version of UT is the greatest on -line game i have played and I have played most.
So for all you Nvidia purists that knock Ati try installing Nvidia in linux o/s lol,it will give you a real headache ,where as Ati is easy as pie and runs sweeeet.
Do have another 3 Pewters on home network and 2 have nvidia which are a pain in the A***,so knock ati all you like ,but for nexuiz ATI does work better for me ,nuff said. 8)

  • I'm currently using an ATI card with Kubuntu, I used Envy to download and install the drivers. It just worked.

I was quite surprised, after reading lots and lots of horror stories about ATI drivers, open vs closed source and of course Nvidia is great and ATi is bad comments I installed Envy and 5 minutes later my ATI card was working, xorg.conf had been updated and I could play Nexuiz / Urban Terror without any problems.

I had to turn the Nexuiz graphics settings down a lot otherwise I would get a lot of random freezes, especially when a bot appeared on screen.
