  • In worst case you can compile the -glx version from the darkplacesengine*.zip file included with Nexuiz. That should work. Just extract it and run make in the new DarkPlaces directory. You have to make sure you have the required libs though..
    I'm not sure if there is much to configure for sdl.. hope the linux pros have more ideas :)

    Try to download the zip file from http://www.nexuiz.com/index.php?module=downloads first. The build date of the engine and the filename data20050818-full.pk3 indicate that mandriva still has Nexuiz 1.2 in its repository. You won't be able to play with that on 1.5 servers anyway and perhaps that'll fix your problem.

    You'll have to compile it yourself. Just unzip nexuizenginesource20060213.zip, open a xterm, cd to your Nexuiz/darkplaces directory and enter "make nexuiz".
    (for everything to work you need to have gcc, make and headers (-dev or -devel packages) for libjpeg, libpng, libsdl and xorg)

  • Hm, do you know how to use gdb? It would be helpful if we had a backtrace of your segfault.

    In case you're not familiar with gdb:
    1) install gdb
    2) open a xterm and go to your Nexuiz/darkplaces folder again
    3) enter "make clean; make debug; cp darkplaces-glx ../nexuiz-glx; cd .."
    4) now enter "gdb ./nexuiz-glx" and when you see the line starting with "(gdb)" enter "run -window"
    5) when nexuiz crashed, you will see the gdb input line again. enter "bt" and post its output here. (to quit gdb, press ctrl+d)

    Been a while since I used Linux, but last I checked Chromium BSU, AA (based on ut200x engine), and PPracer (based off TuxRacer GPL) - they all use SDL :shock:

    I've actually used ATI binary drivers in Linux before and have a few ideas. Is your SDL built against Mesa's GL or the ATI's GL? Whichever it is try the opposite. You could also try uninstalling the ATI drivers and reinstalling Mesa's version, and then rebuild _everything_ against Mesa. Some apps/libs have problems when linked against ATI's GL (did when I used it).

    The easiest [safest] way to do the later is to disable X on boot (boot to con), backup X's config file > uninstall ATI > reinstall Mesa > REBOOT. You have to reboot or the old ones [even tho non-existant] could still get referenced (they shouldn't but they *are*). Where you build doesn't matter - boot to console again and do quick builds is fastest, if you know Mesa got installed/setup properly. Then just reinstall ATI drivers/GL > X's config > reboot into X.

    So the second one is more time-consuming, but it may be easier than trying to debug Nexuiz ;)

  • Also I noticed your GL version:

    squimmy wrote:^7GL_VERSION: 1.3.5519 (X4.3.0-8.20.8)

    The current ATI driver is 8.23.7, did you try the latest release? (I understand if there is a reason an older release works better for you, or if ATI forgot to update their strings.)

    I also noticed the version installed is the XFree86 4.3.0 driver. ATI is quite picky about releasing different drivers built against the different versions of XF86/Xorg. Did you use their new installer, or just one of their RPM? Make sure the versions match.

    That could be a problem. Try replacing the 128 with the 129.

    Okay, I am frightfully worried about touching my ati drivers. It was a total and utter pain in the ass to get them working at all, and I was only able to do that by getting some specially prepared package from mandriva. The best I can probally do is to uninstall sdl and try to compile it by hand and install like that. If the ati driver is most likely to be the problem, i guess it doesn't hurt to try reinstalling them (famous last words!).

    Thanks for the help so far!

    The easiest thing that you could try then, would be to just compile the latest SDL and let it install into /usr/local - and then compile Nexuiz-SDL. 'sdl-config' should do all the magic-foo for you in choosing your new SDL version, because by default on Linux distros the /usr/local/bin path should override the other paths.

    BTW I would be interested to know your X11 version, just do a:
    Code: Select all

  • @ds01: installing a new SDL version won't help. Even the glx version crashed, so SDL is definitely not the problem.

    @squimmy: i'm not an expert on this, but it looks like your ATI driver is causing the crash when the engine tries to compile OpenGL shaders. So upgrading your driver seems to be inevitable. There are a few commandline options to disable OpenGL shaders listed in darkplaces.txt, but i'm not shure whether they will help.

    While SDL is for the most part nearly always backwards-compatible, it is not psychic:
    ^7Linked against SDL version 1.2.9
    ^7Using SDL library version 1.2.8

    It's probably the driver is built against an older release of X than the one squimmy uses, but from my personal experience with the ATI binary drivers on Linux and because those SDL games squimmy says work ok that's what I suggest (given also not wanting to mess with drivers). I say this because I've observed GLX progs failing to initialize while an SDL version [of same prog] inits fine on proprietary ATI.

    That said however, it's obvious ATI has problems with API seeing as they recommend using GLEW after devs railing on them about things not being exposed (besides the point tho).

  • Unfortunately it isn't sdl. I downloaded and compiled all the sdl tests and they all worked perfectly. I also ran darkplaces-sdl which is linked to sdl 1.2.8 and it still didnt' work.

    I'm pretty sure it's my ati drivers, god damn it!!!!

    EDIT:: Interesting fact, on trying to ./configure supertux (I allready have it installed, this was just a test) it couldn't detect any opengl support!

    and...
    BTW I would be interested to know your X11 version, just do a:

    Code: Select all
    version number:    11.0
    X.Org version: 6.9.0

  • If you look at the error in the [supertux] configure log it should tell you why the ATI GL is giving you problems.

    If the reason you have problems installing newer ATI drivers is related to the kernel-module itself, just try the same driver version only choose the ones built against Xorg. This may save you from recompiling the kernel module if that is another issue for you.

    They are available here:
    http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/fglrx_6_8_0-8.20.8-1.i386.rpm

    It may not solve the X11 versioning problems with GLX though, as you noted you are using Xorg-6.9 (and ATI only provides up to Xorg-6.8). Regardless they should be closer than the XF86-4.3 ever will be, and the fact those even work for you in Xorg are miracle.

    As I noted in previous post there are issues building against the ATI GL itself which can be circumvented by reinstalling the X11-Mesa implementation. Un/Installing software in Linux is as simple as moving the files to a different location (and running ldconfig if dealing with libs), but the hard part as I'm sure you are well aware of is knowing which files. Solution: look inside the RPM files with mc (Midnight Commander). It uses vfs, so you can browse inside the packages to see the names of files and where they go. Just make sure when dealing with system files you su to root, so the permissions are saved.

    You really should try getting the newer drivers to work, and if you don't know about it already try this place:
    http://rage3d.com/board/
    There is a Linux section to that forum that may be of use to you, with Linux ATI users there.

    BTW the drivers don't support 32bpp or even 16bpp, only 24bpp and pseudo 8bit. That can be a problem sometimes (you may have noticed this).

    You mean the 'Fatal signal: Segmentation Fault (SDL Parachute Deployed)' message? I must confess i do not use linux for playing yet but i do not think this error message should be produced by the -glx version.. Are you sure it was the same message?

  • No, for the glx version I get a different error, aren't I lucky!

    I get
    Code: Select all
    ^7Received signal 11, exiting...
    ^7OpenGL Backend shutting down

    and the fact those even work for you in Xorg are miracle.

    Would it help if I was to downgrade?

    Typically, enemy territory works great however. Why do some work and some don't?

    AFAIK sig 11 is a bus error

    I doubt it, and it's generally best to use latest drivers anyway. Congrats on getting the newest ones to work btw :)

    I think the issue is lack of support for 16 and 32 bpp modes in the ATI driver. Someone with more experience in the nex [dp] codebase may want to ring in on this though.

    You could try to patch one line #418 in vid_sdl.c :
    Code: Select all
    -        if (bpp >= 32)
    +        if (bpp >= 24)

    ...or another in vid_glx.c line #694:
    Code: Select all
    -        VID_BuildGLXAttrib(attrib, bpp == 32);
    +        VID_BuildGLXAttrib(attrib, bpp == 24);

    Then recompile nexuiz and try running it with -bpp 24. Not sure the differences between 24bpp and 32bpp in this case, i.e. if the alpha chan will give you probs.

  • I did that and it made no difference at all.

  • Okay, this is going to sound absolutely crazy but nexuiz just started fine. Recently I've been trying xgl, the opengl desktop thing with loads of pretty effects and for some reason nexuiz runs OK under xgl. The only problem is sound doesn't work. I get this....

    Code: Select all

  • The usual sound fixes might be:
    Use the command line option -sndstereo and/or -sndspeed 48000 and/or create the file ~/.asoundrc with this content
    Code: Select all
    pcm.!default {
            type hw
            card 0
            device 0
    }

    About those map problems.. what Nexuiz version do you have installed? I almost think its 1.2.1 because of the 'Feb 13' in the log, which is old.. 1.5 is the current version. You will be unable to play with an older version online..
    In case you update make sure to delete the directory ~/.nexuiz as it still holds old config settings which might interfere with the new version then..

  • Those command line options fixed the sound problems, but I'm certain Im using 1.5 as I compiled my version from hand. Besided, the log says

    Code: Select all
    ^7Nexuiz Linux 14:17:07 Apr 12 2006

    EDIT:: Okay, by deleting the nexuiz folders those map warnings disappear. The maps look HORRIBLE and are totally unplayable. It runs with a frame rate of about 7.

    I now, get these errors:

    Code: Select all
    ^7maps/nexdm14.bsp: texture loading for shader "textures/common/caulk" failed (first layer "" not found either)
    ^7maps/nexdm14.bsp: texture loading for shader "noshader" failed (first layer "" not found either)
    ^7maps/nexdm14.bsp: texture loading for shader "textures/stralenex1/greennebula" failed (first layer "" not found either)
    ^7maps/nexdm14.bsp: texture loading for shader "textures/common/hint" failed (first layer "" not found either)
    ^7maps/nexdm14.bsp: texture loading for shader "textures/common/trigger" failed (first layer "" not found either)

  • Well a screenshot would be nice to see what 'horrible' is. (F12) you can find then shots in ~/.nexuiz/data/screenshots.

    The errors when loading the map are ok though.

    I'm still not sure your X is configured correctly.. A X800 should propably get more then 7fps :)

  • horrible is...
    this

    I just realised why it (kinda)works under xgl. My ati driver doesn't work properly under xgl. Meaning it's a problem with my driver :(.

  • Yeah this IS horrible but if its really your drivers not working there is nothing Nexuiz can do.. I'm looking to find time to install ati drivers too maybe i'll have more of a clue afterwards :)

  • This sucks. Maybe i'll do a complete distro switch and see if that gets the ati drivers to work.

  • Wow. I've been able to get it working, at an acceptable framerate. By passing the -noshadinglanguage100 switch to nexuiz it works. Unfortunately if I go to the options menu and turn all the effects on that with a x800 I should be able to have, the fps start to drop to about 10.

    It's definately something to do with the shaders.
