  • for quite some time now i have random graphic glitches. the Gun and the enemy Models start flickering like mad. I have tried to capture it in a screenshot but am not sure wether that is actually sufficient to show the phenomenon.
It seems to happen randomly and if i restart nexuiz it's gone. So far i haven't had any luck in reproducing the malfunction.
VGA is a Nvidia GF6600 currently running with Driver version 1.0.8756 (but it has happened with older versions as well)
Anyone got an idea what could cause that?
    Screenshots:1 2 3 4

edit: forgot to add, OS is (Gentoo) Linux :P

  • Is that Nexuiz from the portage tree and compiled on your system or plain vanilla Nexuiz from our download sites?

  • it's nex from portage, but i _think_ i had that issue with the official binary too, will try to verify it.
    cflags are -O2 -march=pentium4 -fomit-frame-pointer
    edit:
    gcc --version
    gcc (GCC) 3.4.5 (Gentoo 3.4.5-r1, ssp-3.4.5-1.0, pie-8.7.9)

  • i am still on it, i have been playing with both, the official binary and the custom version, but so far the error has refused to show up again.
One Thing i noticed is a severe loss in fps (~1/3 less) with the official binary, but that's a different story :)

  • i didnt say anything on the screenshots; but if the bug comes and goes randomly.. - maybe it is a heat-problem with your gfx-card.

  • Could be.. but somehow i don't think that is the case. It has never happened in any other game and a simple restart seems to fix it. If overheating was responsible the malfunction should be somewhat reproducable and it should return after playing for a few mins after a restart.
This does actually bring up a question: Is there a way to grab the current vga temperature from the /proc interface or something similar? I know there is the nvidia-settings utility but somehow that doesn't cut it.

nvclock can read the temperature from NV43/NV44/NV47 cards (the reading isn't the same as nvdia-setting shows on my card, but the offset seems to be constant at +10°C, so it's usable). It also has a commandline utility, so you can easily generate logfiles in combination with watch.

  • Ok, just had the error with Nexuiz vanilla.
So far the malfunction has only appeared when playing minstagib, not sure wether that is merely coincidence or an actual pointer, will try to verify it further and monitor the temperature as well.
