  • ok, so here it goes, when i play nexuiz, every once in a while maybe 3 or 4 times during a 15min game, it will freeze completely for about 3 seconds. im pretty sure it is not a overheating issue.

my os is ubuntu 7.10 , vid card is asus 7600gt silent. amd 2.2ghz , 1gig of ram. nexuiz 2.4 with hotfix. video card driver are the nvidia-glx-new provided by ubuntu.

after the freeze everythings get back to normal for a while. it is settup for pretty low graphic, i does it even with the lowest effect preset, when it is running at 350fps. it also do it when playing locally in instant action

    any help extremely appreciated.

  • ok, in the past 2 days ive manage to improve case ventilation a lot, and now temp never go above 70 when playing.

i have also reinstall completely nexuiz, deleted old ./nexuiz and reapplied the hotfix.

Issue seem to be occuring less often but still does at least 1 or 2 time during a 15 min game, id say it freeze for a little shorter time (1.5-2 seconds).

I'm still believing that this is not an overheating issue since the heatsink of the card(wich is fanless) is at a very normal temp when touching it or monitoring it during play. usually around 65C.

Is there anyway to be able to try the sdl version to see if it does the same thing, when i started it , it does absolutely nothing.... wont give any error nor any message, just dont start.

Im ready to provide any files or data required to further investigate this issue

  • ok, i have tried playing with vertical sync enable, it kept the temp under 60 and fps under 85, but it didnt change anything about the freezing, happened 2 time during a deatcmatch game.

  • This happened to me when I had a bad nvidia driver, albeit on Windows. Try finding a new one and see what happens.

will try to research for that as soon as school trimester is over...i really need my computer right now for work.

  • well i finally have a good news, i found a way to stop nexuiz from freezing. But i dont feel completely satisfied because I dont know what was causing it to happen.

what i did is use the n_lo.cfg config as stated in this post:
    http://www.alientrap.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1628

and enable vertical refresh rate sync.

what i would like to understand is why when i use this config (in witch there is line that set nexuiz to use 800*600 resolution) the real monitor resolution switch to 1600*1200 instead of 800*600.

i tried to use only vertical sync , but that way nexuiz was still freezing and gave the impression that everyting was real slowwww.

only the combination of n_lo.cfg and vertical sync(70fps) stop the freezing and give fast and smooth gameplay, even smoother then when it is at 300fps

any enlightment on what is really happening would be much appreciated.
thanks for all the suggestions that where proposed to me.

  • after 1 week of playing around and monitoring everything i found out what is causing the freeze. What happen is that another process (named xorg) at a random interval goes up to 90% cpu usage for a period of 1 second. this cause all other process including nexuiz to be ressource less and it freeze for 1 or 2 sec.

Ive manage to raise priority for nexuiz with renice command enought for it to be over xorg and not freeze....but this render mouse and keyboard input very jerky. so raising priority is not the good solution.

What I need to find out is what does xorg do every now and then to take so much ressources...at that point im clueless and need some help from a linux guru on how to determine what is happening and how to fix it.

by the way during this week of foolling around to determine the source of the problem i have reinstall os with ubuntu desktop...it did not make any difference.

Really need help on this , i feel im getting closer to fix this damn issue.
    Thanks

  • Ah yes, I raise Nexuiz's priority also. To fix the mouse jerkiness, find out which process is your mouse driver or HAL and raise its priority as well.

  • Thanks pavlus, that seem to help things a lot....in fact it give quite good results with mouse priority raised too. now i just need to automated those 2 things when starting nexuiz and try it more to see if it is solve completely
