  • I blame the UniChrome graphics. It's slow (too slow for anything that has been released post-2000) and has poor OpenGL drivers that don't work properly with Darkplaces (our engine).

Other than that your system is decent, I'd consider upgrading with something like a GeForce 6600 (GT) if you're into gaming.

I am sorry I don't have better news.

If the old VGA was decent for You and money is an issue, a Geforce 5200 or 6200 would be enough. Available at € 40 - 80.

  • The Unichrome series doesn't seem to come with OpenGL drivers whatsoever, and VIA doesn't seem to offer support on the issue. As stated before, try upgrading to a 6800XT AGP 8x, or a 6600 GT AGP 8x. Your computer should be able to handle it. Even if your computer doesn't support the 8x interface, 4x should work fairly well with some overclocking.

I'd avoid the GeForce FX line of cards. Their weak shader performance really impacts on Nexuiz.

The 6200 for sure is a better choice - but it still is a bit weak. IMO interesting performance starts with the 6600.

Well, surely You and X-Fusion are right. I play on a FX5200 at work and the game runs fine as long as the settings are low. At home I've been using a GF6600, it allows a bit more eye candy.

The 6800 is hardly available for AGP (except the 6800 TD - Turbo Diesel :? - which isn't worth the money) and requires a strong power supply. Especially cheaper PCs sold with onboard graphics don't provide that.
It's just a money thing. Don't forget € 150 or more is a big thing for many people.

The most important thing although is not to use onboard VGA crap if You want to play with Your PC. Even a Geforce2 is better than that.

hehe I agree Nexuiz is pretty fast on a GeForce 2 Ultra without all the effects! (Last time I tried this was 1.2.x.) DP scales really well actually, it's just the effects are so nice, everybody wants them! o_O
