I Have a gravis eliminator aftershock gamepad and it works with the game BUT
the left toggle strafes r & l and goes for & back. the right toggle is look up, down, r and l, but on that right toggle up looks left, down looks right, right looks up and left looks down. I cannot rethink how I use my thumb so how can I possibly return up to looking up, right to looking right, and so on. MUCH APPRICIATED!!!!!

The defaults are made to work on Logitech gamepads. I hoped all gamepads worked the same.
You need to do some 'console' tweaking. Press shift+escape.
The options you may need to change are:
joyadvaxisr
joyadvaxisx
joyadvaxisy
joyadvaxisz

I think only 2 of those needs changing and I don't really know what value they should have
