  • When I start nexuiz, or nexuiz-sdl, all I get is a black screen with a mouse pointer. The following is my console output:

I killed it from a text console. This works but my resolution in X becomes 800x600. xrandr thinks it is still 1600x1200. Doing xrandr -s 0 to reset it works.

  • What graphic card do you have? Your log says:

If you have a Nvidia or an ATI (newer than Radeon 9200) card, you'll have to install the proprietary Nvidia/ATI drivers.
If you don't have a Nvidia/ATI card your gpu/the driver probably lacks some OpenGL instructins required to run Nexuiz...

  • I have radeon xpress 200 integrated graphics. I'm using xorg 7.0 radeon driver.

So are you saying Mesa is lacking some OpenGL support?

It works with Radeon 9200 cards. Is the xpress 200 based on a R200 (Radeon 8x00/9200) or R300 (Radeon 9500/9800) chipset? If it's a R300 chipset, you're probably better off using ATI's proprietary driver, since the R300 driver in Xorg is still in a pretty early stage of development afaik.

Is hardware 3D acceleration working at all on your system? ('glxinfo | grep direct' should say "Yes" if it is)

  • it's r300 based I think. Hardware acceleration is not working. Is it required to run the game?

Yes, mesagl software rendering would only give you about 1 frame per hour :P
So it seems like you'll have to install the ATI drivers.

  • I've installed ati-drivers and now the game starts :) I still have to get hardware acceleration working so it doesn't run smoothly yet, but this shouldn't be too difficult.
Thanks for your help KadaverJack and your quick responses.

So, another onBoard, chipset-integrated Graphics adapter iirc :?

  • Unfortunately there's a bug that recent ati-drivers don't support my chipset anymore. With xorg drivers and mesa when I start nexuiz, I get the black screen, but if I move the mouse to the right or bottom edge I can scroll and surprise surprise there is my desktop. Using xrandr I reset my resolution to 1600x1200 and I get this:
    http://img140.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nexuiz5zy.png

About the hardware accleration needed. OpenGL in software should work just as well (though much slower) as in hardware. OpenGL doesn't even allow for determining whether some function is hardware-accelerated.

Too bad... And downgrading to an ATI driver that does support your GPU doesn't work either?

Just wait a few hours :D

Yes, it will work, but you seem to have no idea how increadibly slow mesa software rendering is ;)
Just try to run chromium with software rendering and you'll see...
(It's actually a license problem that mesa software is so slow: it has to be full featured, otherwise they wouldn't be allowed to call it "OpenGL")

  • The 9200 should be supported by the 3d accelerated drivers in xorg. I tried to get them to work when i still had my 9800pro. However they did not work very well for as the 9800 is barely supported. And even the offical ati drivers were quite bad so i switched to a Nvidia 6600gt for around 150 euro and their drivers seem to be even faster then in windows. (Well after that i only had 2 more hours in windows so this testing was not very intense :))

I can't remember clearly what packages i did install to make the free xorg drivers work with 3d acceleration. I had to install libgl1-mesa-dri, libgl1-mesa-glx and maybe something else too. Maybe its working better for you..

  • Heh, I just tried nexuiz 2.0 and at least it's starting. Frame rates are very poor at the moment because of no hardware acceleration, but maybe the new 8.26.18 drivers from ati will work. BTW can you type somehting in the ingame console to get nexuiz to show fps?

  • I have the exact same problem, except that I have an onboard Nvidia card and it does have hardware acceleration. I still get the black screen, the terminal output and the pannable desktop.

    Thanks

  • I have Fedora Core 5 with no nvidia drivers, when I installed them they slowed down my fps, so I removed them. Hardware acceleration is working though,

  • I never heared about non-nvidia drivers that have working 3d acceleration so i still think thats why Nexuiz does not work for you.. Maybe there was something wrong when you installed them the last time.
How have you tested that 3d acceleration does work?

    Open a xterm and enter
    Code: Select all
    glxinfo | grep render
It should say "direct rendering: Yes" if 3D acceleration is set up correctly.

  • __driCreateNewScreen_20050727 - succeeded
    direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI UniChrome (KM400) 20050526 x86/MMX+/3DNow!+/SSE

So I guess thats a yes
