Explosion bug in 2.5

  • Hey all... love 2.5. Found a weird bug though. Explosions stick around your barrel. See the screenshots to see what I mean.... I believe it occurs whenever you die with an explosion right in front of you. It may also be if you die while firing. It's only happened in hectic battles, so I can't really tell which is causing it. My brother also has had the same thing happen. He says it happened when an explosion killed him (it was in front of him). I am pretty sure I have had it happen even when I didn't die (in fact, I'm pretty sure I didn't die in the time these screenshots are from, because I had a Crylink...) Here are the screenies....

    2) Switching weapons with the glitch. I had another showing after the weapon had switched, but it didn't come out (weird...) Anyway, the next weapon had it as well....

  • This is a packet loss situation. How it works: The server sends you a packet with this firing sequence, (the explosion) you get a few of this packets but some are lost and you never get them, thus the ending never took place on your machine and it sticks around for a while.
    With other words, the servers tells you something but you couldn't hear what it was.
    Usually these disappear shortly after.

    This is network/internet related. Nothing anyone can really do anything about but to get/create a more stable internet connection. This particular packet loss however seems to be very common for some reason. I've got it a few times, so have many others.

  • Well, there seems to be an unknown engine bug regarding entity networking. But entity networking of the entities that show the bug on your shots (muzzle flash, and weapon entity) has not changed at all from 2.4.2 to 2.5, so the fact that it appears more probably means packet loss has become more common nowadays.

    Maybe ISPs are throttling traffic more than last year...

    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

    You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • Actually, when it happened to me, I was on a single-player game, as was my brother... :? Neither of us were connected to other servers....

  • I've had evenings where on one server I had this like 2-3 times per map. Then, another evening, on the same server, nothing bad happened at all! :o

  • Can you make a savegame when this happens?

    On the console:

    save bug.sav

    Then upload this bug.sav file somewhere.
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

    You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • divVerent: do you still think your latest change helped? So maybe people can also try playing at your/mine server and see if they still get problems. Sure that will not tell for sure its gone, but still, if it would never happen on your servers its a good chance it helped :)

  • Got it a few times in my last game.

    This was caused after I fell off the map to my death while firing the rocket launcher. I had fallen off other times while firing, but most didn't cause this. However, there was another time in the same game that the same thing happened in the same situation.

    It's not just the player. Here's a shot of a bot having the glitch. I noticed it after I shot at the bot with my rocket launcher. The explosion killed me, and the bot ran off. As it was running off, I noticed the little fireball in front of it's gun. I tracked it back down and screenshot'd it. In this shot, it kept bouncing up and down on the fan, and sometimes when it came up, it had the fireball, when others, it didn't. They were only a few seconds apart, but I believe it was using a different weapon.

    The last time I got the bug, I ran out my ammo and switched to my shotgun. The fireball disappeared. After that, I picked up more ammo and switched to a different weapon than the first one, which caused the same fireball to reappear. I ran out of ammo AGAIN and went back to my shotgun, which didn't have the fireball. I've seen it happen on my shotgun before, so it's not that it's "immune" to the bug or whatever, but it does seem odd that it would disappear when I switched to certain weapons....

    Hope any of this helps track it down....

  • This bug just popped up while I was firing my shotgun. Server was the Standard Nexuiz Deathmatch - GA USA server. Didn't even die this time... :?

  • How about you do what was asked for and create a savegame so we can take a look at it? We really got that there is a problem by now. Besides as i mentioned it might already be fixed. So can you please try on my or divVerents server?????

    I posted a savegame earlier in the thread... there's a link a few posts back. Here it is again: http://www.mediafire.com/?2zxjtzhdvdi. I tried to do another one while playing on the Deathmatch server, but it said it couldn't (:?).

    The reason I keep posting in here is because I figure that any info may help track it down...

  • Yeah, sorry must have missed that among all those screenshots :P
    Anyway, a potential cause for this was propably fixes and is in testing currently..at least i have not yet heared of people getting the bug on those test servers.

  • I noticed the same bug yesterday playing in my own server with svn updated.
    I din't have in my own weapon, but a BOT had the explosion on the tip of his weapon :D

    Are you on a Mac? I am... someone commented to me yesterday that these kinds of bugs happen sometimes on Macs. Maybe other OSes aren't affected.... :?:

  • In the savegame I see two muzzle flashes that however expire soon. Probably the save game was made while the bot Death was busy shooting the Uzi.

    No other flashes are in that savegame.

    So if one was visible in the player's face, this was clearly an entity networking related problem, and not a game code one.

    4. Open the file in Notepad again

    You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

    maybe a code that DID change in 2.5 made something somewhere else change and caused a chain reaction of sorts? :? thats not totally out of the realm of possible, right?

    I noticed this bug (and reported it very informally on irc) right at the beginnings of motorsep's changes. After the changes made by Morphed I was testing the bots heavily and I didn't notice this at all.
    Again, this happened to me playing locally with a few bots, so maybe there is not packet loss involved ..

  • I know, I'm just telling when I've started seeing this bug so maybe it can be tracked down easily.
    Should this bug be mitigated by your patch regarding the reuse of entity slots ?
    If that is the case I can spend some time trying to reproduce it.
