I just downloaded version 2.4.2 of this game. This is, word for word, the message I received:

"You have reached this menu due to missing or unlocatable content/data.

You may consider adding
--basedir /path/to/game
to your launch commandline."

I am then given the option to "open console" (which brings me to a DOS like setup, which I have no clue how to navigate) or "quit".

How do I fix this? I used to play regularly over a year ago, and I'm looking to get back in the game.

Your post does not contain enough information to give you a step-by-step guide. Learn how to ask questions.

Basically you are launching a game from the wrong directory. Use the proper launcher.

Other than that, I can only give you a general advice - switch to an OS that will not dumb you down.

Btw. Version 2.5.1 is released. Dunno why you downloaded 2.4.2
