  • I have Windows 7 RTM and NVIDIA GeForce 8600GTS. When I tried to run Nexuiz yesterday on my machine without turning off Aero I experienced poor graphic performance even on the lowest settings. When I disabled Aero everything started to run smoothly.

Many games automatically switch to Aero basic (de-facto no Aero) which doesn't use composition and other eyecandy things. Some do it because of incompatibility and some because of performance issues. Why not to implement such option in Nexuiz?

  • this is not needed for most players at least on Vista, and can be set on the properties pane of nexuiz.exe.

does this also apply for fullscreen too?

Looks like a Windows 7 bug...
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • Windows Vista disables all desktop effects (including Aero) immediatly when a fullscreen game is in focus, and reenables them when the game is minimized, placed into windowed mode, or closed. If that does not happen on Windows 7, then it's probably a bug.

Remember that Windows 7 is still not finished yet, and you should expect Microsoft to release bugfix patches even after Windows 7 is released in the future.
    My will be done.

  • If you want the CPU to be less occupied when you're gaming, try this piece of windows software: http://www.iobit.com/gamebooster.html

What it does, is it stops several processes that constantly use the CPU, but that you're not gonna be using(normally) while playing a game.

It will also offer to shut down programs that are currently running.

When you stop gaming, you can open it again and click "back to normal mode" and all processes and programs will be restarted. I've had this for months, works great.

  • I'm on Windows 7, and this works fine for me. What I say: Upgrade your graphics drivers.

Well, I don't know mate. I have RTM too, so I don't know why it's not working for you. One way to fix this is to go to the darkplaces executable, go to properties > compatibility.. Then set it to turn off desktop composition. This will turn off Aero while darkplaces.exe is running.
