  • Hi everyone! I got an old laptop for a job abroad, and after a half year here I started to remember the fun I had playing Nexuiz.

After installing 2.5.2, the game runs fine (haha, I mean no glitches, the framerate is pretty low, see my comp's specs below), except for one important element: I can't see my gun or other players. :D

    My machine:

    Toshiba Satellite A15-S157
    2.2 mhz
    500 mb ram
Intel 82852/82855 graphics card with 64mb memory
10 gig hard drive ( ), 2.5 gig free

    Running:

    Windows XP SP2

I spent a good deal of time searching this forum (and google, but not much luck there) and I found these posts (in order from most recent to oldest):

Player models, weapons skins r invisible! - Intel Extreme g Dec 2009
Weapon model display option? May 2009
    model problem Apr 2009
    Can't see weapons or players/bots Jul 2008
Can't see powerups, players, weapons May 2008
Cant see any model with 2.4.2 May 2008

I've tried to follow most every suggestion listed in those posts (and some others). To save your eyes, let me list them:

    1) Disable/enable various graphics settings
(disable opengl shader/occlusion/v. buff/gibs, use low graphics preset)
    and/or (gl_mesh_drawrangeelements 0, gl_combine 0, gl_lockarrays 1)
    and/or r_drawviewmodel 1
    2) Run game in -safe mode
    3) Run Hash on nexuiz252.zip, checks out fine (d750bc328e58df8492f8d88bdcf818cb)
    4) Give Damn Small Nexuiz a try. Absolutely stunned by how small and awesome it runs [Major props to amoebios, fruitiex!!! 8) ] but...didn't solve my problem.
    5) Run nexuiz-sdl.exe
    6) Reinstalled graphics drivers (twice)

I have NOT tried the following:

    1) Replace the nexuiz.exe with the executable from an older release (I wasn't sure about this, since the forum posts say to do this with 2.4 and 2.4.2.)
    2) Rename model file extensions (I am not sure how to do this, since it seems I need to be able to open .pkg files and I don't know how that's done)
    3) Boot up a Linux distro and see if somehow Linux wouldn't have this problem (however, it's a little bit of a pain to setup: my optical drive is broken and my BIOS doesn't accept USB stick for boot...so I'd have to use another computer to burn a boot disc).

By this point, I think the card in this machine is just so old/idiosyncratic, it doesn't matter what I do, the OpenGl (or whatever graphics element is used for the models) just won't run Nexuiz's code for this!

Nonetheless, perhaps a workaround some brilliant Nexuiz guru can suggest! Or point out that obvious thing I've forgotten to do. 8)

I really don't care about beauty, as long as I can see *something* moving, (or just player "boxes" ala DSN ) I'll be happy!

Thanks so much for reading this long post (or skimming through it! :D )

  • What version of the video driver are you using?
Have you tried the one at Intel's website?
    Intel Driver

  • Hey Silica!

I'm using 6.13.10.3514, which is the most up to date according to the Toshiba model page.

Good idea about going directly to the Intel page. I tried to install that driver. I got an error message stating "this driver cannot be installed on this computer."

I'm not sure, but I think the Intel page doesn't list the driver for my card (even though the category does say 82852/82855). The drivers say 852/855...is that the same thing as 82852/82855? Perhaps not, the readme for the driver states:

This file is written specifically for the Intel® 852/855GM, 915G, 945G, 945GM, 915GM/GMS, 910GL, and 910GML chipsets and will not function with any other product.

Also, the "Intel Driver Utility" thing they offer from their site, that is supposed to automatically detect what driver you need, doesn't seem to run in my Firefox.

  • Try downloading the zipped version from the link I gave you
Unzip it and try installing it with the instructions in the readme file.

  • Silica, did anyone ever tell you about your supreme genuis? 8)

It works! Heh, all I needed was the latest driver. Got to love the irony: the first troubleshooting step I take I didn't do correctly, and now I came full circle! :D

    Thank you Silica! :)

Also, I want to thank Merlijn, Spaceman, Ohaiii and Plasmasheep on Irc for doing their best to help me. Turns out they couldn't imagine how much a newbie I really was. :D

    Time for some fragging!
