  • Hey guys,

Nexuiz keeps crashing whenever I try to use my Radeon HD 4850 with the game, lasts all of 20 seconds then the sound will repeat and the screen crashes and freezes, same thing it does with Fallout 3 but I hear that's normal for that game, and it lasts a LOT longer before it crashes in that game.

Nexuiz works fine when I use the onboard graphics though (also ATI).

I have the latest drivers also, is it a common problem with nexuiz and ATI cards?
    :]

  • I presume you are using the darkplaces engine released with nexuiz 2.5.2. Can you try the development version ? it should be more ATI friendly since Lordhavoc now use a radeon gpu.

You need to rename darkplaces.exe to nexuiz.exe.

  • Radeon cards handle Nexuiz 2.52 very well in general, even though performance is quite poor in comparison to matchable Nvidia cards. I haven't been using anything else than Radeons for months now, I never suffer any crashes.

I suppose they sold you some piece of crap. I warned you. Have you already checked the temps of your system? What OS are you using? Do you have some more specs of your computer?

  • well, i also thank for the darkplaces hint, will try that too (problems with SVN)

i also noticed - quite weird i think - that the default cooling mode of the catalyst driver, being automatic, doesnt work well (or not at all?). i never noticed it turning on, even with temperatures short below 80 degrees celsius. (may lead to errors and crash)

however, it helped to turn the fan on by default - via Catalyst - to cool it down to ~55°C.
because it is a LOUD fan noise i noticed that ~35% speed is enough to keep the temperature that low, and is also nearly unnoticable (compared to by CPU fan noise, hrhr).

You may look into that too.. (CCC Ati Overdrive section)

Barely related: my 2.2GHz Athlon64 seems to be a bottleneck for this card; performance isn't much better than with the former Radeon 9200.. although partly worse! Now i understand some of you players complaining about this and that low FPS on certain maps - whilest my age old 9200 performed very well (lower than low settings) on say 'BoxGarden', the 4850 scores similar to worse with bigger partial FPS drops..
At least it gives more Bling for many maps ^^
