• d3drocks, I guess you have an imaginary PS3 or clearly are lying about your friends list. PS3's don't support that many friends on a list.

    Nice try though.

Besides if you have nothing good to say, don't say nothing. It'll avoid arguments when there doesn't need to be one.

  • Is very funny to see how greedy can become an open source contributor when see that another legally uses a program with commercial pourposes

Is sad to see so many people has a twisted definition of open source on their heads (Open Source == Closed Mind? if Stallman were dead will be turning in his grave, but he is alive so wont notice about this hopefully...)

Will be extremelly funny to see both of these groups of people playing the console nexuiz

Anyway, was good to know about the people behind Illfonic, good luck with the project

    cheers ^^

Maybe you didn't read all the posts, but just small number of the developers that contributed with code to Nexuiz were actually contacted and asked for legal rights to use the code.

Yes, it's sad to see that many people don't know about Open Source. And I'm not sure if you understand either. It doesn't mater that it's called open source, the thing that really matters is the license, because there are many types of open source licenses. As far as I know, Nexuiz content is published under GPL and that means that anyone who uses the code without the author's consent has to publish the future work under the same license (GPL).

So, if they used content without contacting the authors, that means that it's illegal, because they will not publish the game under GPL.

I hope I made my point.

Nicely said. Indeed, it's sad things to see such things happening this way, with people from an opensource group involved...

Don't be so ignorant. This isn't about "open source" at all, see our community statement.

  • Did anyone notice that on the Source Forge page of Nexuiz (http://sourceforge.net/projects/nexuiz/), the homepage link points to www.nexuiz.com, which is actually the Console Nexuiz?!

I don't know if the link was like that before the "sell-out", but someone should change it, fast.
Considering that Nexuiz is listed with 12,000+ weekly downloads (BTW, wow !), it is unfair and confusing the link to the Console Nexuiz as the homepage of the free Nexuiz.

  • I've a question about that. I saw the video and it seems amazing the quality of shadow and reflections. Now, while the "GPL Nexuiz" is GPL licensed, will this new commercial Nexuiz let the source code open or will it be closed? Can someone explain me that, because I'm confused! :?:

I think this is quite fantastic, even if they took the Nexuiz name. There are 4 things I think I see from the video which I quite like and would appreciate in our own project, #1: Weapon and view movement seems to be more fluid and cleaner.. Probably due to new animations for the weapons and other view changes in the game code. This is something which needs redesigned in Nexuiz, as just weapon bobbing which isn't very realistic is fairly poor. #2: A melee attack with all weapons... I saw the player lunge at other players with their weapon at an angle... If this can be done in console Nexuiz, it can be done in real Nexuiz. #3: Smoother jumps and generally smoother movement with jump pads. #4: HUD killfeed with a _real_ killfeed, and a simpler HUD.

Also, stop rating the video down just because of the name. That's childish and petty, get over it.

I've never played a shooter on a console, but I think the fluidity that you are talking about is due to the fact that moving is done with the console controller, and not with the mouse. Plus, if you enhance fluidity, you loose precision and speed.

No. I'm talking about the camera movement and weapon animations, not precisely the smoothness of aiming. Latest Nexuiz has smooth aiming anyway due to a higher ticrate + higher netfps. Also, weapon animations and camera bobbing/movement has nothing to do with speed.. It would not affect precision or speed at all.

Just to let you guys know I haven't gone away we've just been really busy with after GDC meetings. I know all about what has been going on and trying to stay on top of what everyone is saying. It saddens me to see some mis-information being said, or things being taken out of context and otherwise skewed. I can say that we did have a great GDC. The response was awesome. I can also firmly state we did talk about the open source version of Nexuiz to everyone we met. LordHavoc and Vermeulen can vouch for that as well.

I'll try to start responding more when things settle but right now we're extremely busy and have to stay focused with as little stress as possible to ensure we create the best product we can. I think you guys would be very excited to see some of the things we are bringing to this version of Nexuiz.

    Thanks

It will always be appreciated (at least by me) if you correct information that is wrong and that has been posted here. After all, most of the people can only rely on what they read here or on IRC. It would be sad if irrevocable decisions were being made and based on wrong information. Also, if context is missing, feel free to add it if that puts another light on things.

From my point of view, lack of proper communication has a very dangerous potential in every social aspect.

Wanted to comment on this one too, but that's a totally different topic.

I am sorry to say, but personally I wouldn't be excited at all, at least not in a positive way, about anything you are bringing to console Nexuiz. And that's SOLELY because of the way things were handled and the way all this has been communicated towards the Nexuiz community. I'd love to like the things you are doing, but it is very difficult for me to ignore this.
