  • Any news on the already discussed sound issues for 1.5 or is that on ice for now untill we know more about it?

    Thanks

  • I have some sound issues too (and graphics issues, framerate issues, connection issues...), but I don't remember what it said to do on the old forums.

  • Try adding -sndstereo and/or -sndspeed 48000 to the commandline. This has been said before in the new forums but needs to be Sticky really.

Its still good to have, as there are several new player that's asked about the same. Did this make it into the 1.5.1 FAQ?

  • I asked help for this problem on another post (see Ubuntu 5.10 No audio thread)...

    Now I use the command:

    ./nexuiz-linux.sh -sndstereo

    and it works perfectly! :)

  • While we have reports that it solves the problem on linux, on windows there is no change; positive or negative.

    Here is a question.
While nexuiz supports 5.1, does it support stereo speakers as well or is it surround only? Might be a dumb question but that wouldnt be a first for me
Like I mentioned in the old forum, my hardware is fine since I have no issues in other 5.1 games. Currently I have GTA: San Andreas on my box and it sounds rather beautiful...so did nex 1.2.1.
For us having this problem, it's very difficult playing since many times one is fragged from behind from a close range without even noticing it. All sounds are extremly muffled and blured except ones own. Own sounds are simply loud and sound very metalic.

I have been wondering this with the new sound system. Under Windows I have noticed really rubbish directionality that is as if it isn't downmixing to 2 speakers. I have my sound drivers set to 2 speakers but no real help.

Under Linux since specifying -sndstereo it seems to be downmixing properly now.

  • I use windows with a stereo only soundcard.. who needs more than 2 speakers anywyas.. you only have two ears :) and i too have some problem figuring out direction of the sound.. especially if you use the MG on me, i hardly notice it before I'm dead.

Yeas.. but still with only two ears.. ther eis no way do differentiate a sound thats stright in from of you with one thats right behind you. You only have perception of sound in width, noth in lentgh. To achieve that you have to rotate your head.. wich we do :)

  • We do precieve sound in length, it is just far more limited than how we precieve width.

Yes, but not front-back. You cant differentiate between a sound 30% fron right from 30% back-right either.. Unless hearing them in order as the back one would be a little lower.

Is it the same with nexuiz.exe and nexuiz-sdl.exe? If it is, then it's probably not dp's fault...

I've just tried this. I closed my eyes and span round really fast with my computer playing music. Being completely dizzy I would have had no idea where my computer was at any time but could tell where the sound was coming from. So you can tell directionality in 360 degrees, but not entirely in 3D. If a sound is directly above or below you, it is very hard to tell where the sound is coming from and it sounds ambient.

    I'm dizzy.

    Hehe

Nice research there, but the breain uses loads of methods to determinate direction, like the movement of you body relative to the sound.

more than 2 speakers does make sense, as me make little movements all the time, and would find directikon simply by turning our head a little, but using headphones, without moving your head, you would get the same sourroinding effect :)

Did this make it into the 1.5.1 FAQ?

Its now in the FAQ for 1.5.1 ..

PHREAK wrote:While nexuiz supports 5.1, does it support stereo speakers as well or is it surround only? Might be a dumb question but that wouldnt be a first for me
Like I mentioned in the old forum, my hardware is fine since I have no issues in other 5.1 games. Currently I have GTA: San Andreas on my box and it sounds rather beautiful...so did nex 1.2.1.

As i understand it only the -sdl version should use 5.1 sound. The nexuiz.exe or if you use the -sndstero command line option 2.0 sound is used. At least it was that way for me when i did some quick tests..
One other problem is that there are problems getting infos from the sound card. Nexuiz tried to mix with 44000hz but some sound card/buildin ones can only to 48000hz. the -sndspeed 48000 sound option should help there.
That bad thing is just that both do not seem to work for you..
A very long shot is to try raising _snd_mixahead to more then 0.1. try steps from 0.1, 0.2.. to 0.5.
The only other variable i can imagine to influence this problem is bgmbuffer. its 4096 by default. try raising/lowering it..

The -sndstero option should work the same under windows.. Are you totaly sure the option is used? :)
You might want to make sure by using a batch file.. just put it inside your Nexuiz folder, besides the nexuiz.exe file.. The name of the batch file should not matter as long as its called .bat. nexuiz.bat should be fine ;)
    Code: Select all
    %~d0
    cd "%~p0"
    nexuiz.exe %* -sndstereo -sndspeed 48000
    nexuiz.exe %* -sndstereo
    nexuiz-sdl.exe %* -sndstereo -sndspeed 48000
    nexuiz-sdl.exe %* -sndstereo

You should have only one of those nexuiz... lines!!! I just added the four possibilities so you do not have to type so much :)

  • Hey Stahl,
I only use nexuiz.exe and I have tried the -sndstereo command with no real difference.
Just to be sure it's not my stupidity, i'll do thru all the suggestions again and try to notice anything different but fact is, whatever I do, I can't pinpoint the sound ingame.

Also, does anyone elses sounds sound quite metalic and low quality or is it just me?

Nope, it's not just you I'm afraid. In the old forums there were at least 5 people that replied having the same problem. I'm glad you started a new topic here, so the problem doesn't get forgotten.

    To sum it all up:
    * It looks like it is a windows only problem and the parameters that work for Linux users don't make any difference
    * It looks like the problem occurs with people who are using an on-board soundchip
    * All sounds are very muzzled
    * Own sounds sound loud enough, but very metallic / toyish
    * There is no way you can tell who is shooting at you since you can only see that you're being hit, but can't hear where it's coming from at all.

  • I've played 1.2 again this weekend and the difference is remarkeable! In 1.2 I can clearly hear where shots are coming from. I can hear where players are located because I can hear them walking, jumping, taking jumppads, picking up weapons, going thrue teleporters, shooting and so on. In 1.5 I can only hear myself, my own fire and the sound off flying bullets. I DON'T hear anything from other players (nor where it's coming from) and it's starting to drive me insane!
This is not a rant, but I had to type some intro to refresh your mind

Anyway, since it drives me insane (because it's almost unplayable), I want to try out some things myself. First off all I want to check if it's the new ogg sounds or not, before I start digging into something else.
I've noticed that the attribution of sounds happens in the files located in "gamesource15/qcsrc-15/server/gamec". If I extract "gamesource15.zip" and just edit and save the files in "gamesource15/qcsrc-15/server/gamec" with WordPad for example and assign the old wav sounds, will these changes take affect or do I have to recompile everything?

  • Ok, I've unpacked the pk3 file in the data directory and replaced all "misc" and "weapons" sounds with the old 1.2 sounds. I've unpacked the gamesource and changed all files where those sounds were referenced, to use the 1.2 sounds (wav instead of ogg).

I guess I have to recompile Nexuiz now? But how do I do this? What program do I need for this and can I download it somewhere? Can someone guide me thrue the process of compiling Nexuiz? I don't have any experiance in building applications other than the PowerBuilder applications I make, so go easy on me

If the replacing of the sounds doesn't do the trick, I'll have a go at the sound engine. Are those the "snd_" files in the darkplaces directory under the "nexuizenginesource" zip file?

Btw, I'm using Win XP Pro SP2 if that should make any difference...

  • Oh i just noticed i did not write to you regarding all those sound problems.. sorry.

I'm not sure maybe its ok if you rename the .wav files from 1.2.1 to .ogg to replace the 1.5 versions. Should hopefully work without recompiling anything. Though this should not be done for something official :).

If you want to recompile it anyway you need fteqcc from here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... _id=129507
Just put fteqcc.exe into the server directory and start it from there. It should create a progs.dat which is the compiled gamelogic (maybe its in ../.. can't check right now). There is actually nothing more to do for this. But i'm not totaly sure if the newest version of fteqcc will work. (If not try the 2600 or 2501 version)

Yeah i think the snd_ files are the ones you are searching, but i did not really look much into DP yet.

Maybe you want to try this sound test program i meantioned here: http://www.forums.alientrap.local/viewtopi ... =3322#3322

  • Thanks for the info esteel (as usual) !

I've recompiled and tried with the 1.2 sounds, but besides the fact that I like these sounds better (personal preference) it doesn't seem to make any difference. I still can't really hear incoming fire nor distance or direction.

So I'm going to take a look at the soundengine now. Can you tell me how I can recompile the darkplaces engine, is it the same as recompiling the game sourcecode?

Too bad I can only try changes on a local server with bots, that just doesn't give the same result as a real online match.

  • Sorry for the long wait.. You need a C compiler to compile the Engine. There should be files to do this with the ms visual studio or you can install minGW, this is free but a bit more complicated and it took me some time to get it to work.
However i heard rumor that LordHavoc is working on the sound engine again. I have however no idea if this will help with anything :)

When compiling the game sourcecode, it compiles into a file called "progs.dat" that is put into the "data" folder. Can you tell me what file the engine is compiled into and where that file is located?

  • Depending on how you compile it its nexuiz.exe, nexuiz-sdl.exe or darkplaces(-sdl).exe..
Hmm i honestly think linux is easier for sw developing.. There its almost enough to extract the engine source and call make in the new directory. Well if the needed libraries are installed but thats very easy to do then :)
