Hey, I got a problem

When I boot up Nexuiz, its slow as hell. Also, I see the menu but the center part is all black (I dont know its suppsoed to be) and the sound is all choppy. I am using linux (debian) and my video card is an onboard ""Intel Graphics Adapter V6.14.10.3847"" running on a ""AsusP5GD1-VM-UAY0Z"" motherboard with an ""Intel 3.0 (hyperthreading"" cpu and 1 gig of ddr ram. I am using the 2.4.27-2-386 Kernel, I did not download any extra drivers for the video card so whatever linux gave me as default is whats running.

If you're running the standard drivers, that may be the problem. Try doing:

from a terminal and see what you get. Just for comparison my 6600GT gets around 8000 and that runs Nexuiz well on fairly high settings.

Nexuiz is very graphically demanding and it may just be that you need to run lower detail settings. Try

The commands "exec med.cfg and vid_restart" made no difference.

Looks like you don't have 3D acceleration activated.

Does it say "direct rendering: Yes"? If it says no, make sure your xorg.conf (or XF86Config if you are using sarge) is setup correctly.

If you are using testing or unstable, you might have more success with the xserver-xorg-video-i810 package from experimental (the intel 945GM GPU in my notebook didn't work with the drivers from unstable, but works fine with newer ones in experimental).

But even if you get 3D acceleration working, you probably have to use "exec low.cfg" in Nexuiz to get playable framerates. The 945GM in my notebook is barely playable (13-30fps with 3 bots on the smallest map at default setting...). But if my quick google search was right, your mainboard should have a free PCI-E slot, so you can upgrade your graphics card...

Well, on an early Pentium-M notebook with integrated 8xx graphics I achieved playable framerate... but I think that was in Windows.

I don't know if the Xorg drivers have comparable performance to their Windows siblings.

I checked out the XF86Config-4 file but it seems that everything is enabled. the DRI and GLX modules are enabled and the DRI mode is set to 0666.

Of courze it's the crappyness of your "card". Actually it isn't a card at all, it's just emulating one and takes power from CPU and RAM.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that the AsusP5GD1-VM-UAY0Z isn't that variation with no AGP or PCIe slot for a VGA card (like I have a complete P4/3G standing around here, wondering wtf to use it for)

What really raises my aggresions is the dang computer manufacturers who sell crap like that

haha, Yea I only bought this mobo because at the time I did not have a job, so I could not buy a video card at the same time. Im gonna be getting something around the line of a 7300 (256). Nothing too expensive, just good enough to run my games.

EDIT: Something that I find odd though is that this card can run Unreal Tournament 2004 fine with low/medium graphics. (but that was on xp)

If your mobo takes PCI-E then a 7300GT would be a very good choice. Far quicker than the cards below it and in some cases it'll match a 7600GS.

If it takes AGP then the 7300's are not available on AGP. The 7600GS is coming out on AGP about now. Give it a month for the prices to settle and for them to be widespread.

If it only gives you PCI then the fastest NVIDIA on PCI is a 5500. There are very few of them though. The 5200 is for widespread and far better value but they are still scarce and many etailers just won't stock them. The MX420, 440 and 4000's are more widespread but may not be much better than your existing graphics.

I get the exact same problem, but also with Alien Arena 2007, which I think uses the same engine.

I have an ATI 9600 Pro with ATI's Linux drivers installed, AC97 sound onboard my ASUS A7N8X, run by an AMD 2600+ Barton Core with 512MB memory.

I'm at a loss as well.

This sounds like you have a mixed installation of the ati driver and the mesa software driver.. What output do you get from glxinfo | grep -i direct ?
