I played through Quake recently again with these settings. It does make it much more realistic. I've now found every secret in the game.

In the old forum such a thread did get turned into a bit of a flamewar by people who think that this is sacriledge. If you don't like it, just don't play it. Let everyone who wants to remodel/retexture/relight do it.
