  • I've been following the general progress of the Pixel image editor for a few months now. It's a cross-platform (Windows, Linux, BSD, OS/2, and more) Photoshop lookalike. It aims to do everything just like Photoshop, and then improve upon what Photoshop offers. It's in beta right now and it's not open source or free, but it's really cheap. it's $32 if you purchase it now and it will be around $70 when it is officially 1.0.

Anyone using it? I purchased a license. I'm very excited about the program, but I am thinking that it won't usable at a professional level until about version 1.5 or maybe even 2.0.

  • I'm primarily a Photoshop user as well. If you're used to Photoshop, you can use Pixel with no problem. Pixel bases a lot of its functionality and interface on Photoshop. They also plan to innovate past Photoshop's functionality. It's definitely not a foreign interface for Photoshop users. It's nothing like Gimp or even GimpShop.

You can install a demo version of Pixel for free if you want to try it out.
It puts a watermark on the files, but you can see what it can do.

  • While Photoshop is often considered the best for image editing by many people, there is one thing that it is hopeless at: saving compressed images. If you're going to use it for textures only save in an uncompressed form, then get convert or GIMP to write the compressed file.
