I heard about this super game called Nexuiz that I can get for free, so I searched for "nexuiz" on Google.
In the top 50 results I found "Nexuiz warez crack".
If I want to play Nexuiz for free, I must need to download this crack.

Ok, so I have to open the .nfo file to get a serial number to unlock Nexuiz.
I typed my email address as it asked, and I clicked "Download".
I got WinZip so I could open the zip file, and I opened the readme.nfo file like it said.
Finally, after scrolling through the cool ASCII art logo, I reached actual text.

Ok, now I have to run crack.exe to patch Nexuiz. Too bad the crack is .exe; since Nexuiz runs on Linux and Mac OS they should make cracks for them too.
So I ran crack.exe. After that, I started up Nexuiz and it worked perfectly. The crack lowered the security settings of Internet Explorer, which allowed me to bypass the security features of Darkplaces.

And that is how I got Nexuiz for FREE!



Of course crack.exe is a trojan (I didn't actually run it), Symantec has named it Trojan.LowZones.
Having cracks, warez, and serials distributed for a game is a (bad) sign of its popularity, and this scum of a website making it into the top 50 search results is ridiculous.

If you are stupid enough to download a Free opensource game from warez http or p2p then you desive to get infected from trojan crack files and popup's

This is rather serious.. Ok most people should notice that Nexuiz is already as free as it can get (Do not tell my the bsd licence is more free ) so i hope only stupid people fall for this trick. But that this thing is top 50 in google worries me. Does anyone know how the chances are to convince google to take this thing out of the list?
On the other hand its cool to see that Nexuiz is popular enough that people feel this kind of trick will do it. Maybe we should mention on the download page that Nexuiz is a complete game that needs not serials or whatever

But to keep this forin being spam only. Making a solid point on the download/intro page that this is a GPL, all free, no money needed pice of softwarea is a good idea.

That's almost as bad as Linspire's Click n' Run system. (If you have the Linspire distro of Linux, you can install software through Click n' Run, which basically makes you pay to install free software with " a single click!").

If you buy "Doom 2" from Click n' Run, it is actually FreeDoom. (http://freedoom.sourceforge.net/).

EDIT: - Hmmm.... Nexuiz seems to be on Click n' Run also.... that's even worse than a warez crack for it! At least it seems to have good user ratings.

I've checked on the Click n' run page, and apparently they say that you should use Click n' Run because installing software on Linux without Click N' Run is like this:

Acquire and unpack tarball. Invoke make file and compile binaries. Check termcap binaries and customize the .Xdefaults. Rename xfoo and install as root.

I wonder if they have ever heard of Klik? (http://klik.atekon.de/) . Yes, you can install software with "a single click!", too, and you don't have to pay $19.95 a year to use it!

Nope, selling is allowed! You can actually do almost anything with Nexuiz as long as you provide the sources and in case you change it make it clear you did and that its based on Nexuiz. Heavily simpified!!!
There have been a few CDs up on Ebay some time back. They were actually done quite nice. Just think about GNU/linux and how many CDs with it are sold

And I wouldn't pay 20 bucks a year for Click'n'run - it's horribly outdated. They still got Nex 1.2.1 there...

I use Ubuntu for the very same reason. Click n' Run is such a ripoff...

I think this malware is more bad then click'n'run but if people fall for Linspire they deserve it . At least its not illegal to sell Nexuiz..

Or just about any other modern Linux distro. Most have package management of some form, many have a repository based system. Repository based package management may seem like a good thing but how many 3rd party developers will then release deb's? Not many since they expect the distros to update their repositories with packages anyway. Problem is they're not up to date. So, if you use a distro whose package management is based around a distro provided repository, don't expect 3rd party developers to provide packages for it, your distro should.

The site for the "Nexuiz Crack" seemed to follow this procedure:
From a large list of software titles, take each title and create a page titled "<title> Crack" and create a file called "<title>.zip"
The zip file contains only crack.exe, the readme.nfo file which gave the "instructions" and one other file with the names of groups contributing to the distribution of the trojan files, and contact info for anyone who wants to join them. The zip file does not actually contain any real cracks or anything which relates to the software it is supposed to crack.
The program which automatically generated these pages and zip files probably offers cracks for other GPL software, based on the nature of its operation.
I hope I am the only person who has downloaded the "Nexuiz Crack", because valid Nexuiz download links are more easily accessible than this site, and those links describe that Nexuiz is free, so nobody should want to look for a Nexuiz crack.

This site mimics Google search results and has links from pagead2.googlesyndication.com with gaming-related links.

I did a whois on the site and there are almost 1 million domains registered to the same IP address as nexuiz .org
ICANN really shouldn't allow that sort of thing, it seems obvious.

I found a few sites who linked to nexuiz .org, and they were not malicious, but you would think that people would check a link they put up.

Looking some more, I think nexuiz .de is taken too, but I won't look into that tonight.

Don't go to these sites. If you must, please just don't click anything.

Nexuiz.de belongs to a directory website about game websites. They actually do link to nexuiz.com in their directory, but still this practice of domain registration is malicious. Maybe SavageX or Vermeulen should write to the directory people that they should NOT put the directory on that site.

Personally, I would agree to that if they prominently link to _our_ Nexuiz website on the start page of the domain.

It really is a sign of popularity though. I'm rather flattered that a handle I use on a couple of forums (not here) has actually been registered as a domain name for one of these cybersquatting sites.

I agree that these domains are a problem as some people may see the association with cracks and warez and take it the wrong way thinking that Nexuiz is part of it.
