I can not suggest ATI, their Windows drivers are low quality (see screenshot), and they don't put much effort into their Linux drivers.

Image taken under Windows during a CTF match after I unminimized Nexuiz. Nexuiz was not minimized for more than 15 seconds.
The ATI driver seems to have forgotten the textures for the flag and some other stuff in the background, as well as parts of the hud.

  • I would also suggest to get a nvidia card. They seem to produce the better cards (and drivers!!!) currently. Just make sure to get agp/pci-e depending on what your motherboard supports. But it seems good agp cards can be hard to get.

  • I agree, don't get ATI. Nvidia cards have much better drivers. For playing Nexuiz at full settings, I'd suggest getting at least an Nvidia 6600, although for better performance you should probably get a 6800 or 7800. Remember to buy a card that fits your motherboard (AGP/PCI-Express).

Also, don't get the 7300. It's actually slower than the 6600.

6800 w AGP almust unavailable, 7800 shiad xpensive, but veery wowee!

Yep, it's AGP. I would suggest a graphic card somewhat like these two :
    256MB, Radeon X1600 Pro, DDR2, DVI, TV-Out
    256MB, GeForce 6600 GT, DDR3, DVI, TV-Out

  • Yeah the board seems to be AGP. I have a ati 9800Pro card and its actually ok for Nexuiz.
There still seem to be nv6600 card around 100-200euros. But i can't comment on how good they are. Urmel says they are good for Nexuiz so i guess he is right :)

If You can afford, take an ASUS AGP-N6600GT/TD128, AGP8x, Retail GeForce 6600GT, 128MB DDR3, DVI, TV-Out
    (ie @computeruniverse.net 145,- €)

    and it's better to have 128MB DDR3 than 256MB DDR2, trust me!

THe AGP version of 6600GT is out of production, so its either a 6600 regular or a 6800 GT (expensiver)
I'm using a 6600 regular 128MB. This allows me to play
1024x768 RT lights on, bloom and particles off at ~100-120 FPS.

  • I use a 6600gt/128 for the computer i play nexuiz on, and its woked grt sofar. the only drawack is that the standard cooler on most of them sounds like a vacumcleaner :? so i recomend you get a zalman VF700-Cu or one of em cards with silent/pasive coolers if you are noise sensative. do note that installing a new coller on the gfx card usualy voids its waranty.

Wrong. ATi's drivers, especially their Linux ones, are far worse than nVIDIA's. Just look at the number of ATi related problems on this forum and you'll see why.

As for card, I quite like the 7600GS. More powerful than a 6600GT and it's passively cooled. Their may well be one on AGP in a few months.

  • ATi drivers aren't great by any means. my ATI driver will lose textures in DX9 on windows. There is their target market, so obviously that doesn't help nexuiz, which runs on most major platforms and uses opengl...

  • How does the nv6600 run compared to the ati 9800? I'm thinking about getting one too especialy as i really want to start using linux more again and I do not want to switch OS to play nexuiz. Though atis drivers seem to get better they are still very bad from what i hear. Hmm it seems there is now an official debian package for the ati drivers http://packages.debian.org/fglrx-driver so i might test that one before actually buying a new card :)

  • The 6600GT is a lot better than a 9800 XT. The standard 6600 is better than a standard 9800. Under OpenGL the difference is more, I would expect Nexuiz to be far quicker with the 6600.

The standard one is very good but isn't as good as the GT which is now the best selling card ever. That's quite something when you cinsider how many Geforce 2 MX's were sold in about 5 different forms over 2 years. The only point in getting a standard 6600 instead of a GT is if you can get one of the passively cooled ones. The 7600GS is quicker than the 6600GT so if you're on PCI-E get one of those (XFX 500MHz model), if AGP then wait for the AGP versions which are due in a few months, no idea if it's the same speeds though.

  • Hmm debian unstable is currently making big changes in the X part so i can't test the ati drivers without too much work and trying. So i'll wait till i can test this and KadaverJack also told me about free drivers for that class of ati cards.. Hope debian is fast with those changes :)

  • Playing on Linux ? oO :D (Even if I was an absolute Linux-freak I'd also install Windows to play games, otherwise you will not have a real good choice of many gamse to play)

Playing Windows games: these are either supporting Direct3D (MICROSOFT) or OpelGL (sometiems both of these). ATI * OpenGL = slow (bad choice), ATI + Direct3D = good choice

if you play Nexuiz a lot and want to have good performance there, take a Nvidia card. (I bought a X850 Pro and I regret it, however, playing other retail-games would be cool with, but I don't have the time to do so^^)
