  • Well i got those free r300 drivers to run but they are highly unstable and currently do not work very well for me.. 40fps and fullscreen looked more like desktop resolution and only those pixels in the middle used.
But its a start, i'll search the web for more info and when debian updates its ati drivers i'll test them..

Sounds like you used the wrong scaling mode for a TFT screen.

Debian now updated their ati-driver package and it works just fine.. More fps and the resolution is ok. Guess it was a problem with the free driver.

  • I got a MSI Radeon 9800 XT Pro by chance (and for free) and put it in, my first Radeon ever since. Benchmarks (VGA stability test & Dr. Hardware) were just fine, 25 to 50% better performance than my Geforce 6600.

Nexuiz started, I realized that the Colour settings are to be done completely different. After several adjustments I see where I'm running now, but I'm really in big trouble aiming my opponents. I hardly see them!!!

Bad enough, I realized that the performance in Nexuiz is much worse than the Geforce one. Framerates are going up and down the way I remember from baaad baaaad days I had some weeks ago (see my post "game runs perfectly blah..." in the Support/Bug Topic).

After all I can only recommend to You, be wise and don't believe in benchmark software!

And it seems ATI is developing its products only into good benchmark results. :P

  • To everyone considering using linux, get a nvidia card, my old ati 9800pro was terrible even with atis closed source drivers. The nvidia 6600gt i got now is even faster in linux then in windows.

I just had a nice conversation with a fellow player that has similar fps drop problems. I suppse you have your old problem back. You said you updated your mother board and something in the update was about agpgart. If you start the ati catalyst center in advanced mode and go the 'smartgart' page you problly find agpgart disabled.. at least it was the case for that player. He is just looking for a way to activate it.. if he activates it in catalyst it jumps back to deactivated, so maybe there is also some bios setting or mother board driver thing. Would be very helpful if you take a look at it too if you still have that ati card, urmel.. Maybe we can find a cause for this after all..

  • Well, at home I got back to my Nvidia fastly :D

Now I built the ATI into my company PC which is a well running P4/2,6GHz system.

Without installing a driver, Win said the card was installed properly. Starting Nexuiz showed me something else. Even in the Startup menue the mouse was moving hardly and jerking!

I installed the catalyst together w the config center, and first thing I got at the next startup was an error message. :P Updating the .net framework helped me out (wtf?????).

Now it's running, and in Nexuiz I couldn't stat any performance win comparing to the Nvidia FX5200. Tomorrow's another day, I'm gonna try out that smartgart thang, we'll see. Haha! 8)

  • You really installed a graphic card without prober drivers? Hehe no wonder the card was not running fast..
yeah .net 2.0 is required for the catalyst control center where you can make your settings. Though you do not need it for the drivers and they offer a small and simple tray icon control with almost the same settings..

  • Oh, hehe, btw, actually my post up above wasn't meant to be "can't get my ATI running properly" :D
Just wanted to tell the people about experiences and awarenesses I get by testing stuff, this is not possible for everybody I think.

Back to topic, I took a look at the smartgart and noticed nothing special. Everything is active and on "full throttle". Performance will be tested later.

Still I'm convinced that the ATI 9800pro is weaker than it's commonly considered. One thing I wonder about is Xant's post saying that the NV6600GT doesn't run faster than the ATI

  • Well my 6600gt does not run much faster then the 9800pro in windows but it is faster..
Hmm, if your agp settings are at full speed and you have drivers installed it should work quite fine then.

well, even my 6600 (w/o GT) runs faster than the 9800pro.

Yes it does. But still I assert all tested Nnvidias have a better signal quality and the colour management especially in Nexuiz is much easier. Just talking about in comparison to the 9800, the newer Radeons (even the R300) show slightly better colours and sharpness.

obi_wan told me to increase the red colour values, it made efforts but still I have problems in spotting the enemy players.

I'll go on screwing the bolts next week when I find the time for it

At the moment I'm more involved to an openGL error with some Nvidia cards in the software my company develops.

  • You can also use the ingame video and color settings in Nexuiz to make it more bright and visible. That is unless you play in windowed mode or with dual monitor.
    I use
    Code: Select all
    set "v_hwgamma" "1"
    set "v_gamma" "1.5"
    set "v_brightness" "0.1"
    set "v_contrast" "0"

and its bright enough for me so i did not change the ingame color settings.
