  • What if Nexuiz 1.0 had originally been released as a commercial game?

  • Then innocent children and women would be sad and cry all over the world. Flowers would stop blooming. And life would cease to matter.

  • Nexuiz 1.0 was actually a horrible release, so commercially it would have been a complete failure.
The game was still fun, but only a small minority of downloaders actually got a chance to try out the gameplay. Most didn't get a chance because of high default settings that they never changed, lack of servers set up in their area (primarily north america), and no bot support.
2.0 was high enough quality to release commercially though

  • on the other hand, more people would have known about Nexuiz, if it had been commercially distributed. Nexuiz was at version 1.1 when i discovered it and i immediately liked it, so i guess a considerable amount of other players would have liked it too.

  • At the 1.0 stage I hated Quake and anything that had similar gameplay. I never played Nexuiz only when morf forced me to. But I saw very quickly that because there were such few players that morf owned them all. He was no doubt out of anyones league. So when I played I tried to beat him, only at 1.5 stage did I get hooked and was pretty much the second best player around. And I think it was because of that (and because I wanted to beat morf, which I haven't been able to) that I continued to play Nexuiz :)
But then time went by and more and better players came. Then there was Luna who I had a hard time with but still was a tad better. And then finally Kojn came and pushed me back on the rankings... damn you btw :D Well at least I was among the top 2 best players :) Now I have no idea.

So? Big Rigs: Over The Road Racing got over 20.000 copies sold. Wouldn't call that a failure... and it certainly could do much less than Nexuiz 1.0.

It's just a matter of PR... and whether you are willing to ruin your name for all times but earn the money for 20.000 copies of it.
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

I'm pretty sure that all those copies of Big Rigs sold AFTER gamespot proclaimed it to be the worst game of all time, and people wanted to try it out. >_<

  • But there is truth to it. Even negative publicity helps with success. I think publicity is the one thing Nexuiz really lacks...

  • lol
i heard the word "nexuiz" randomly in #linux-clan and thought i'd `eix nexuiz`
looked at it, and then I was like... "WTF!? how could I have missed that one!?"

yes I think nexuiz really lacks PR :>

  • i don't think we should advertise more. the servers would be constantly over-crowded.
they already are. some are crashing on a regular basis.

i think we should cease advertisement and take the website off-line or at least remove the download links.

    Okay, that was obviously irony...

but for those who did not get it: if there are more people who know the game, there will be more servers too.

I took it to mean, "What if Nexuiz had been a commercial venture?" It wouldn't have to be closed source and, unless I'm confusing it with another game, it couldn't have been closed source, because the engine itself is open source.

As a commercial venture it would have sold, probably quite well. We'd have more servers, more players, faster release/patch cycle, and fat-cat devs racing CCRs through Europe snorting blow off the muscled abs of thousand dollar hookers. Good times.
