  • Hi all,

i just want to give you a hint of how to set up a second X-Server on linux. I think most of the Linux users here know this. So this is for the people who don´ t know it like me since yesterday.
With another X-Server it is possible to play Nexuiz and to keep an eye on irc, game-browser or internet at the same time.

    Start a second X-Server on tty8:

    startx -- :1

(you can switch to tty8 by typing ctrl+alt+F8 )

you can also set the windowmanager, which should start:
    (in my case:)

    startx /usr/X11R6/bin/wmaker -- :1

On SuseLinux 10.0 it works properly. I can´t tell if it works with all distributions the same way.
    So try it!

Why use a window manager for the second X server, when you can do "startx ./nexuiz-linux-686-sdl -- :1"? ;)

Nice hint... actually it rather goes
    Code: Select all
    startx `pwd`/nexuiz-linux-x86_64-glx -- :1

Now the switching goes with Ctrl-Alt-F8 and Ctrl-Alt-F7.

However, I know a faster trick. What you need:

A window manager with virtual desktops than can "remember" windows to be borderless or where it's easy to make it borderless by a short keyboard action (Enlightenment, Fluxbox, Openbox, treewm for example can do that, no idea about KDE since I don't use it).

What you then do: you start Nexuiz, but DISABLE full-screen mode. Instead, you set width and height to your screen dimensions. You will then have a window that's too large because of its borders. Now comes the trick: You put the window on a virtual desktop of its own and make it borderless (don't forget to tell your WM to remember the setting if it can).

To switch to another desktop, you press Shift-Esc Ctrl-Alt-Left (or whatever your WM uses for desktop switching). To switch back, Ctrl-Alt-Right Shift-Esc. Note that window manager control keystrokes only work when the Nexuiz console is activated.
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

I tried that nice trick with windowmaker and it worked.
The disadvantage of this solution for me is, that fps of my machine reduce to the half. I usually play with 800x600 and would have to make the window 1280x1024.
On stronger machines your "window-solution" is more conveniant.

    Greets.
