Qestion: "What is a girlfriend?"

Answer: "Girlfriend is an expensive port to insert your dongle for uploading. Actually, some allow use of up to 3 ports (2 front ports and a rear port), just not at the same time. You may have conflicts if you try to utilize 2 or more Girlfriends at the same time.

The Girlfriend can be upgraded to Wife, however, that's something you generally would want to aviod as that would mean restricting yourself to only one. So if the Wife got broken you would be stuck; although, you could throw her away but that would cost you a lot.

Some girlfriends can come with a dongle as OEM. Avoid them! Use your own dongle or a third party dongle, some even have a rumblepad function so it can vibrate. Be sure to use a firewall as there are some nasty viruses out there!

While dongle porting is their primary function, they are very helpful with various housekeeping chores. So it is nice to have one around. However, if yours starts making a whining noise it is time to replace her. I suggest upgrading to a newer model frequently as they quickly become obsolete.

Just because you guys can only use one port at a time, that doesn't mean that girlfriends are restricted to that.

You will find many second hand girlfriends on MySpace, now that's for sure.

i had a cool MySpace. all it had was gray text saying "go away!" on a gray noise background. then i wanted to add some music (actually, just whitenoise) and had to delete my account and subscribe as a musician. and now i can't change anything. stupid MySpace.

I believe these are called "Plug and Pay" Girl Friends
With these "girlfriends" negotiation and transfers(monetary) are usually completed before there is any connection with the ports. Once the "handshaking" is done you may upload to the allowed port(s) in the timeframe agreed to.
WARNING ! The less expensive "Plug and Pay" Girlfriends may have SCSI ports.
